Description

J. CONWAY. ROOFING NAIL. APPLICATION FILED APR. 13, 1908 928,630, Patented July .20, 1909.
, WITNESSES:
ANDREW u. emu! 00. ammunmmmma WLakmGraiL n 0.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN CONWAY, OF BELLEVUE, OHIO.
ROOFING-NAIL.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, JOHN CONWAY, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Bellevue,
in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing-Nails, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in roofingnails, being specially designed for use in securin composition roofing material, the primary 0 ject of the invention being to provide a generally improved device of this class, which will be exceedingly sim le in construction, cheap of manufacture, e 'cient in use, and much better adapted to its intended purposes than any other device with which I am acquainted.
With these ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the ap ended claims.
eferring now to the drawings, forming a part of this s ecification, Figure 1 is a plan view of the b ank for formin the improved roofing-nails. Fig. 2, a simi ar view of the same in its partially formed condition. Fig. 3, a side elevation of the same in its com pleted form. Fig. 4, a similar view of the same, the edges of the prongs being shown. Fig. 5, a sectional view taken through line 55, of Fig. 3. Fig. 6, a similar view showing prongs partially bent to their normal position. Fig. 7, a view of the under or prong side of the improved nail.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved nail is made up of a single blank of sheet metal as shown most clearly in Figs. 1, and 2, of the drawings, and comprises a circular head or main body portion 1, provided with oppositely-disposed widthwise tapering prongs or tines 2. The face of the head is preferably convex-shaped as shown, and the up er orbase ortions 2 of the prongs 2, are ent upon t e under side Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 13, 1908.
Patented July 20, 1909.
Serial No. 426,717.
of the head 1, the lower ortions 2*, being bent at the center of the cad, at right angles to the base portions 2 and extending or projecting at right angles to the head, forming a double-pronged securing shank. The lower or shank portions 2 are preferably strengthened or reinforced by means of longitudinally-extending ribs 3, pressed in and extending outwardly on each side of the shank portions 2 and, as a means for se curely retaining or anchoring the shank portions 2 of the nail when driven home, anchor rojections or studs 4., may be struck out of t e shank portions 2 as shown in the drawings.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the novel features of construction and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. A roofing nail, consisting of a single piece of sheet metal formed into a head having an outer layer and an inner layer formed of two portions folded under the outer layer and meeting substantially midway thereof, and two rongs extending substantially at right ang es to the head from the meeting points of the folded inner layer portions, said prongs being in close proximity and terminating in a sharp oint.
2. Aroofing nai consisting of a head comrising an outer layer and an inner layer formed of two portions folded under the outer layer and meeting and terminating in widthwise tapering prongs extending in close proximity to each other and at substantially right angles to said inner layer portions, said prongs being provided on their outer sides with longitudinally-extending ribs.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN CONWAY.
