Description
Niris STATES A'rnNr HAT AND COAT HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,255, dated March 8, 1898. Application filed March 8, 1897. Serial No. 626,412. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it itctg/ concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD A. BREUL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat and Coat Hooks, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in coat and hat hooks, and particularly to such hooks formed of wire and from a single piece.
It is the object of my present invention to both simplify and strengthen the construction of hooks-of the above class, and, further, to lessen the cost of making the same, and, iinally, to produce a hook which can be made direct from a wire coil by means of automatic machinery.
By the production of my novel hook I am able to meet the demand of the trade for an inexpensive but reliable hook which can be made quickly, easily secured in position, preferably by driving the points thereof into the wood, thus obviating the lengthy and objectionable method of preparing for and screwing the saine into the wood.
I am aware that it is not new to produce a threadless hook from a single piece of wire, and my invention does not reside solely in such a device, but consists of new features and novel construction, as will later be more fully described, and finally recited in the claim. i
Upon the accompanying drawing, forming a part of the speciiication, the same characters of reference denote like or corresponding parts upon the figure, which shows a side elevaton of a wire hook embodying my invention.
Referring to the characters of reference marked upon the drawing, a, indicates the top point, b the uppershank, and c a head for the same.
downwardly-extended body portion which l serves to lie flat against the wood into which the points of the hook are driven. Said body portion further serves to limit the depth to which said points are driven in the wood, and, further, to give set and strength to said hook when secured in position.
findicates the outwardly-projecting support of the lower hook, and g the head thereof, which is similar in appearance and purpose to the head c, before mentioned.
h indicates a straight return lower shank for the head just mentioned, and o' a point for the same, which is preferably a flat or chisel-like point. Said point is driven into the wood by a succession of blows upon the head g, before mentioned, by a suitable tool, such as a hammer or hatchet.
If it is desirable to form a single-pronged hook, it can be easily done by simply shortening the parts b and d, but retaining the head o, upon which to drive the points in the wood.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
A coat and hat hook formed of a single wire blank and consisting of two straight outside shanks madeiby the end portions of the wire blank and two inner Shanks formed by the U-shaped central portion of said wire, said outside shanks being parallel and having driving-points arranged for seating the hook-Shanks in an inclined direction.
Signed at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairield and State of Connecticut, this 6th day of March, A. D. 1897.
RICHARD A. BREUL.
