CHARLES C. HOLT, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF. ONE-HALF TO THOMAS HALL, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,543, dated. February 9, 1892.
Application filed March 14, 1391- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. HOLT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Screw, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in nails and screws.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive wood-screw and nail adapted to be readily driven by a hammer, wrench, or screw-driver.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a wood-screw and nail constructed in accordance with this invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are similar views showing different constructionsof heads. Fig.4cisatransverse sectional view. Fig. 5 is an end view showing the triangular point. Fig. 6 is a side view of the blank before twisting.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a wood-screw and nail constructed of suitable metal and provided at one end with a head 2, which may be either square or round, or have the form of the ordinary screwhead,t0 enable the nail and screw to be readily driven by a hammer, screw driver, or wrench. The body of the screw and nail is provided with a round portion The portion 4 is triangular or rectangular in crosssection and is provided with a tapering triangular or rectangular point 5, and is twisted Serial No. 385,098. (No model.)
concaved faces.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that the screw or nail is simple and inexpen- Each angular edge of the 40 The thread maybe increased by making the portion 4 with slightlysive in construction and adapted to be readily 5o driven in wood or other substance by a hammer, wrench, or screw-driver.
I do not limit myself to making the portion 3 of the nail round or cylindrical, as the salient feature of this invention resides in the the portion 4: polygonal in cross-section, and 6 5 the tapering point 5 of the same shape as the portion 4, the portiond and point 5 being provided with one continuous twist, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
