UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
L ISRAEL F. BROWN, OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT.
WOOD-SCREW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,831, dated July 24, 1883.
Application filed December 2. 1882. (No model.)
To all whom zit may concern:
Be it known that I, ISRAEL F. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New London, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wood- Screws, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has relation 'to wood-screws; and its object is to provide a screw that will be of such a strength as will readily admit of its being screwed home in the wood without twisting off the head of said screw and to that end the novelty consists in the peculiar shape of the head of the screw, whereby its strength is largely increased, aswill be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a countersunk head screw embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a similar View of a flator round head screw.
A is the body, B the head, and Cthe threaded shank. D is the slot in the head, and by means of which the driver forces the screw home.
The countersunk head B, where it joins the body A, is rounded, as'showii by the letter a. This prevents the formation of an obtuse angle or fillet at a, as would be the case if the straight lines of the countersunk head and body intersected, as is the case in all woodscrews of ordinary construction. A line drawn from the apex of this angle to the apex of the angle in the bottom of the slot in the head will show the weakest point in all the ordinary forms of wood-screws, and this is the point where the screw proves, faulty in use, whereby the heads of the screws are frequently twisted off while being driven home. difliculties and objections I completely overcome by rounding the head at a, so as to supply more metal and prevent the formation of an obtuse angle, as in the ordinary form of screw.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The improved wood-screw, having the mentering angle formed by the junction of the head with the body re-enforced, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISRAEL F. BROWN.
