Description

(No Model.)
W. H. PERRY.
NAIL. No. 328,515, Patented 0013.20, 1885.
JZiF J UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. PERRY, OF SHARON, PENNSYLVANIA.
NAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,515, dated October 20, 1885.
Application filed February 4, 185 5. Serial No. 154,905.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM H. PERRY, of Sharon, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Nails and Spik es; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification,1in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plain nail or spike embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a like view of a nail or spike with indentations. Fig. 3 is a like view of a modified construction of indented nail or spike, and Fig. 4 is a like view of a barbed nail or spike.
This invention has relation to nails or spikes made from wire blank, and has for its object the provision of a nail of such a form or shape as to be easily driven into wood, with but little or no danger of cracking or splitting the wood, and which shall not be liable to turn or twist while being so driven.
A further object of this invention is to produce a nail or spike which when driven into the wood will take a firm hold on the fibers thereof, and thus be more likely to remain in position than are nails of the well-known formation.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a nail or spike of such formation. that it can be made from wire blank with but little manipulation, two of the sides of the nail retaining the original shape of the wire blank from which the nails are out.
(No model.)
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents the body of the nail, having two of its sides, a b, straight and parallel, and the other two, 0 d, convex.
B represents the head of the nail, which is either square or round. a
0 represents the point of the nail, which is formed by chamfering the square or round sides of the nail to a sharp edge, thus forming a chisel-point, D.
The square sides of the nail are either plain or barbed to retain the nail in the wood, or they may be indented, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. These indentations are preferably in regular order on the parallel sides of the nail, and are formed by using a roughened or serrated roll for flattening the sides of the nails.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a fiat wire nail, chisel-pointed, and having two of its sides parallel and the other two sides convex, the parallel or flat sides being indented or barbed, as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a flat wire nail having a chisel-point, and two of its sides barbed or indented, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM H. PERRY.
