Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER V. HUSTED, OF NEY YORK, N. Y.
BARBED NAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 398,260, dated February 19, 1889.
Application filed October 9, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PETER V. HUSTED, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbed Nails, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a barbed or roughened nail of such construction that in entering the wood or other material into which it is driven it will not tear the material, but cannot be drawn outtherefrom without the application of a force sufficient to tear the fiber of said material.
.My invention consists, therefore, in a barbed orrfoughened nail in which the barbs or roughnesses are arranged around the shank in a spiral direction, or, in other words, a spirally barbed or roughened nail.
One form of my improved nail is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which A is the shank. Bis the head. 0 is the point, and D Serial No. 287,633. (No model.)
D are the barbs 0r roughened elevated points or projections, which, as shown, are arranged in a spiral, so that in entering the wood or other material the nail is made to turn by reason of this spiral roughness. The smooth surface of the barbs or roughened projections being downward, they do not interfere with this turning when entering; but the rough and broad surface being upward the barbs or rough points wholly resist any effort to extract the nail unless a force is applied sufficient to tear away the substance surrounding the nail also.
I claim I A barbed or roughened nail provided with a smooth shank and a row of barbs or roughnesses arranged around the shank in a spiral direction, substantially as shown and described.
PETER V. HUSTED.
