BALE TIE.
No. 588,514. Patented Aug. 17,1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS WARREN, OF HOOKSTON, MISSISSIPPI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH BAUM, OF MERIDIAN, MISSISSIPPI.
BALE-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,514, dated August 17, 1897. Application filed February 1, 1897. Serial No. 621,586. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS WARREN, of Hookston, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bale-ties; and the object of the same is to provide an effective tie of the simplest and cheapest possible form.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tie with the ends of a bale-band secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the band removed. Fig. 3 is a view of the blank from which the tie is formed.
The complete tie is formed of a single piece or section of heavy wire or light bar-iron bent to form the U-shaped body portion A, the same being bent centrally, so that the extremities are of the same length. The ends are then turned at right angles to each other and to the longitudinal extent of the body portion, end B being projected upward, as
shown, and end O bent inward toward the base of upturned portion B, thus partially closing the open end of the tie-body.
When applied to the looped ends of the bale-band, as shown in Fig. 1, the bent ends hold the band-loops from slipping off the tie, but in no sense does either bent end obstruct the passage of the band-loop over the other bent end in applying the tie. The material used is sufliciently stout to withstand the strain and any tendency to straighten out without closing the open end of the tie by uniting the body extremities with a trans verse member.
I am aware that it has been proposed heretofore to provide ties adapted to be arranged transverse the bale-band with one open end and to obstruct such opening, so that the band'ends and tie will not readily separate, and such form of tie is not herein broadly claimed; but I am not aware that it is old to form a'simple and effective tie of the form herein described and claimed and possessing the peculiarly superior qualities thereof.
. Having thus fully described my invention,
,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improved bale-tie formed of a single blank of heavy wire, the same consisting of the elongated U -shaped loop closed at one end and adapted to extend transverse the baleband and in the plane of the same with the band extremities looped around the parallel sides of the said U-shaped loop, extremities B and O of said loop being bent at right angles to each other and to the longitudinal extent of the loop, extremity B being disposed 7o upward from the body of the tie to hold one extremity of the band from slipping from the tie, the other extremity lying in the plane of the tie and extending toward the base of extremity B and nearly closing the open end of the loop thereby effectually preventing accidental disengagement of both band extremities, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS WARREN.
