H. WV. OATLIN, OF BURLINGTON, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO V. H. CLARKE,
or BROWNSVILLE,
PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN METAL LOCKS FOR WOODEN HOOPS FOR CASKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,621, dated July 19, 1864.
To 2% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, H. W. OATLIN, 0E Burof Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Lock or Fastening for the Hoops of Gasks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is an outer side view of my invention applied to the ends of a hoop; Fig. 2, a section of the same, taken in the line 00 w.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Wooden hoops for casks have hitherto had notching the same and overlapping them, so that the shoulder formed by one notch will bear against the shoulder of the other notch. This lock or fastening materially diminishes the strength of the hoop and renders it liable to break where the notches are made.
' My invention consists in constructing a lock or fastening of metal, and out of a plate provided with two openings and of curved form, so as to admit of the ends'of the hoop being passed through the openings, and to lap over each other and be securely fastened by striking the outer side of the lock with a hammer or pressing it inward, so as to clamp the hoop, as hereinafter fully described, and form a secure lock without diminishing the strength of the hoop.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully proceed to describe it.
A A represent the two ends of a wooden hoop, which may be of the flat or half-round kind, and I3 represents my improved i'asten- I ing, which is constructed of a metal plate, of rectangular or other suitableshape, having two openings, a a, made in it, of square or rectangular form. This plate B is bent or curved, so as to approximate to a V shape and admit of the ends AA of the hoop being passed through them and to overlap each other, each end passing through both openings, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. When the hoop is fitted on the cask and the lock B adjusted to it, as shown, the operatorflattens the look by striking it on its outer side, and thereby causes the ends of the hoop to be firmly clamped, each end. being gripped or held at two places, the end A at the places 1 2, the place 1 being the upper edge of the opening a, and the place 2 the lower edge of the opening a, the'end A being held at two places, 2 3, the place 2 being at the lower edge of the opening a, and the place 3 at one end of the plate, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
The lock B may be swaged out of'a piece of sheet, metal, or it may be of malleable cast iron. used.
Thus by this simple device I obtain an ef- .ficient lock or fastening for hoops, and one which may be applied with the greatest facility and without diminishing the strength of the hoop.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A look or fastening for the wooden hoops of casks, constructed in the manner substantially as herein shown and described.
