It will be seen that I provide a simple and eflicient locking device in which there are no projecting parts protruding beyond the case proper to interfere with the proper and economical stacking of the cases or to be caught, broken, or disarranged, and one which may be quickly sealed when desired.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principles or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, al though without having attempted to set forth all the forms in which it may be made or all the modes of its use, I declare that what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. A box-fastener for sheet-metal packingcases, consisting of a plate secured to the lid or cover and provided at its rear with a handle, an opening or recess formed in the front portion of said plate and cover, a cross-bar mounted in said opening or recess, and a spring-latch secured to the front portion of the case and provided with a hook adapted to take over and engage said cross-bar when the lid is closed.

2. In a box-fastener for sheet-metal packing-cases, the combination with a plate secured to the lid or cover and provided at its rear with a handle, an opening or recess formed in the front portion of said plate and cover, and a cross-bar mounted in said opening or recess; of a spring-latch secured to the front portion of the case, a hook formed at l the top of said spring-latch and adapted to engage said cross-bar, and an opening formed in the front wall of the case, opposite said spring-latch, wherethrough the said springlatch may be manipulated.

3. A box-fastener for sheet-metal packingcases, consisting of a plate secured to the lid or cover, a handle formed at the rear of said plate, an opening or recess formed in the front portion of said plate and cover, a crossbar secured in said opening or recess, a springlatch secured to the front portion of the case and provided with an opening, a hook formed at the top of said spring-latch and adapted to engage said cross-bar, and an opening formed in the front wall of the case opposite said springlatch, substantially as described.
