Be it known that I, EDMUND M. SHAEFFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at IIarrisonburg, in the county of Rockingham and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Barrels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in 10 the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention has relation to knockdown barrels, and more particularly to fasteners by means of whichthe barrel is firmly and securely held in position when set up for use. The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive fastener which will securely hold the barrel in position when set up for use and which will offer no obstructions to tear or injure the hands in hoops.

With this object in view the invention con- 2 5 sists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barrel, illustrating the 0 application of my invention thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan View. Fig. 3 is aview taken at a point opposite to Fig. 1 and showing the manner of securing the ends of the hoop-wires in place, and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the inside of one of the stavcs to show the clenched end of the hoop-wire.

In said drawings, 1 denotes a barrel, which may be of any well-known or approved construction.

The fastener consists of a bar a, having an eye at one end and a row of notches on its under side, the entrance to these notches being in the same curved plane or line as the inner edge of the bar, whereby the bar is permitted to lie close against the side of the barrel between one of the looped ends of the wire hoop, and in this position the strain of the looped ends of the wire hoops will be at a deadcenter to the connection of the ends with the bar, so that the fastener will be tightly held against the side of the barrel. However, in order to prevent the accidental disengagement of the bar, due to rough usage of the barrel, I drive staples over the free end of the bar, which will positively prevent the said 6 bars being accidentally swung outward. The outer edges of these bars are also curved, so as to present a smooth surface and prevent the hands or clothing becoming damaged.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A barrel-fastener comprising hoop-wires doubled upon themselves to form end loops, and having their extreme ends formed with prongs adapted to be driven in the sides of the barrel, and a curved bar having an eye that engages one of the loops and provided with notches, the entrances to which are in the same curved line as the inner edge of the bar,the outer ed ge'of the bar also being curved to present a smooth surface, staples for securing the hoop-wires to the barrel and a staple for securing the free ends of the bars between the looped ends of thehoop-wires, substantially as set forth.
