y PATENT 1 VArisica.,
WARREN R. VAN VLIET, OF LEBANON, NEW JERSEY.
BASKET-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NoB 535,311, dated March 5,1895.
Application filed June 9, 1894. Serial No. 514i052 (N0 modem To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN R. VAN VLIET', a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and usefullrnprovements in Basket-Covers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in basket covers, and relates specially to a cover for the character of basket used for shippin g peaches, apples and like fruit.
The object of my invention is the provision of a cover of simple and inexpensive construction which can be easily applied to the body of the basket and which will permit of the easy handling of the basket without danger of the cover becoming accidentally detached but which can be easily detached when necessary thus proving a practical and desirable cover.
The invention consists of a basket cover embodying novel features of construction and arrangement of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a part of a basket and my cover thereon. Fig. 2 represents a sectional View of the same on the line I-I.
My improved cover is of very simple con struction and broadly stated consists of the flat thin wood strips A, which are crossed and secured at the center and have their endsB, bent and secured by suitable fastenings between the bands or hoops C, and this forms a light but strong cover.
To the hoops at proper places and at one side thereof are secured the Wires D, having To the hoop of the cover at a suitable place is also secured the fastener consisting of the loop H, having the hook J, which engages the hoop of the baskety and opposite to this fastener is a fastener having the loop K, the bend or eye L, and the terminal hook M, which engages the hoop of the basket and to the loops H and loop or eye L is secured the double wire bail or handle N, having the hand piece O, as clearly shown.
From this construction it will be seen that I provide a cover having fastenings which enable it to be easily and quickly applied to the body of the basket and which cannot possibly become detached accidentally but which when necessary can be disengaged and the cover removed and which fastenings also serve to hold the carrying bail and enable easy handling of the baskets when filled.
I claim- 1. A basket cover having the fasteners arranged thereon each provided with the loop passing through the cover and with the terminating hooks, the intermediate fasteners having a hook to engage the basket, and the bail secured to the loops of the fasteners for carrying the basket.
2. A basket cover consisting of the strips and hoops, the fasteners arranged opposite on the cover and having the loop passing through the cover and the terminating hooks, and the wire bail secured to the loops of the fasteners for carrying the basket.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WARREN R. VAN VLIET.
