BELT-COUPLING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,695, dated April 10, 1888.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, NICOLAS QURIN, a subject of the Emperor of AustriaHungary, residing at Kirchberg-on-the-Vechsel, in the Province of Lower Austria, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked-thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in belt-couplings; and the object of the invention is to overcome the numerous disadvantages andinconveniencesoccurringinbelt-couplings now in general use, and, among other advantages, to make them practical, so that when attached to large or small belts they will not become loose; to provide means that can be easily and readily attached or detached from the belts; also, to prevent the liability of injuring the hands when applying them; also, not to weaken the ends of belts by piercing holes through them; furthermore, to make them applicable for belts such as those made of cotton, hemp, caoutchouc, 850., as well as with leather belts; and, finally, to make them durable as well as cheap.

The invention to this end' consists in the construction of certain details and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon.

Likeletters indicate similar partsin the different figures of the drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the belt-coupling. Fig. 2 is a top view of the Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line :0 w of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section showing the ends of a belt connected by the beltcoupling. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the end of a beltcut down to facilitate the entrance thereof into the coupling.

In the drawings, A and B are the sides of the belt-coupling, and O and D represent the connecting-bars of the sides. The bars 0 G,

forming the end bars, are provided with a series of teeth or points, cc, arranged to slightly incline toward each other, while the bar D, forming the central bar, is provided with teeth cl, arranged in opposite direction to those on the bars (l.

The teeth may be square, round, or other suitable shape, and the sides may be slightly curved, so as to conform as near as possible to the curve or circumference of the pulley.

The belt-coupling represented in the drawings is to be constructed of malleable iron, although it may be made of sheet iron, bandiron, or other suitable material, and of any size required forlarge orsmall belts. It may also be made of compressed leather, and the teeth then must be of wire of suitable size.

The operation is as follows: One of the ends of the belt, having been shaped as shown in Fig. 5, is inserted into one side of the coupling, and the teeth having been entered into the belt it is placed upon a suitable foundation and struck with a mallet and thus clinched. The opposite end of the belt is then inserted in the coupling and treated as stated, when the operation is finished, the teeth thus engaging with the opposite ends of the belt alternately and preventing displacement.

The many advantages possessed by this improved belt-coupliug will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art, and will require no further commendation here.

1. The belt-coupling herein described, consisting of the sides A B, connected by crossbars 0 G and D, provided with teeth or points 0 d, arranged to engage with the ends of the belt from opposite sides, as shown and specified..

2. The belt-coupling described, consisting of the sides A B, connected by crossbars O 0, provided with upward-projecting teeth 0, and middle bar, D, provided with downward-projecting teeth 01, arranged to engage and clinch the ends of the belt, all as and for the purpose set forth.
