To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL R. KOSITZKY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bismarck, in the county of Burleigh and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to fastening de vices and has special reference to a fastener which is constructed so as to releasably connect the two ends of a band together so as to hold the band in a releasable assembled condition.
Another object of this invention is the production of a fastening device which is adapted to be particularly used upon knockdown crates so as to hold the same in a set up position when desired.
Another object of this invention is the production of a fastening device which com: prises a plate having a substantially S- shaped tongue formed'thereon, which tongue is adapted to extend through an opening in one end of the band for releasably holding the two ends of the band in engagement with each other.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a central vertical section through the crate, showing the same in an assembled position by means of the fastening device.

Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view, partly broken away, of the connecting bands of a crate, showing the fastening device in operation thereon.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that the fastening device is adapted to be used upon a crate, having a top band 3 and a bottom band 4. These bands 3 and t are connected by vertically extending metal slats 9, as shown in Fig. 1.
Each band 3 and 1 is provided with rolled edges 11 for efiiciently reinforcing the same around their respective edges. The metallic plate 12 is secured to one end of each semi-circular band, and the substantially S-shaped tongue 13 formed of spring metal extending therethrough constitutesa locking pocket 14 and an inwardly bent spring lip 15. Each plate 12 is secured to the bands 3 and 4 by means of the rivets 16.
The bands 3 and 4 are also provided adjacent their free ends with apertures 17 through which apertures the substantially S-shaped tongues are adapted to passfor holding the ends of the bands in engagement with each other. At this time the ends of the bands will fit within the pockets 14 of the tongues 13 for holding the crate upon which the device is to be used from being accidentally collapsed. By having the lip 15 of each tongue formed of spring metal it will be seen that the lipwill assist'in retain! ing the tongue in its correct position upon the free end of the bands for the free end of the lip will bear upon the bands for urging the body of the tongue in one direction 7 V for holding the tongue from accidentally springing through the opening or aperture of the band.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and efficient fastening device has beenprovided for releasably retaining the two ends of the band in engagement with each other, whereby a knock down crate may be efiiciently retained in a set up position. It will further be seen that owing to the S-shaped construction of the tongue, the body thereof extending rearwardly from the plate 12 will form a pocket in which the free end ofthe band will fit, while the forwardly extending lip will bear upon the free end of the band and will thus cause the body to be urged into engagement with the free end of the band, thus holding the tongue from accidentally releasing the ends of the band.
