Be it known that I, GEORGE E. MAURER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken- Coops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention relates to improvements in chicken coops and it has for its principal object the provision of an extremely simple article of that nature constructed in such a manner that the various members thereof may be readily detached from each other when the coop is to be cleaned, stored, or shipped, and may be subsequently re-attached without the use of pins, rings or similar independently constructed fastening devices.

The invention further resides in the pro vision of a coop of the type above described in which the number of component parts and in consequence, the cost of manufacture thereof are reduced to a minimum.

The invention still further resides in the provision of a coop one of whose end members is formed with a series of air and light openings.

The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by the same reference numerals throughout the several views.

Of the said *drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved coop with the cover omitted. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the body member of the coop. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cover of the coop taken from the inner side thereof. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the coop, showing the cover in place. Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken on the line 66 of Fig. 5.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that the coop consists es sentially of a body member 7 which forms the side walls and bottom thereof, and front and rear members or ends 8 and 9.

The body member is formed from a single strip of sheet metal, of the requisite width, bent into the shape of an equilateral triangle, the side edges of said member, both Specification of Letters Patent.

front and rear, being provided with lateral flanges 10, coextensive in length with said edges, as shown and the bottom being provided at its free edges with upstanding flanges 10 for engagement with the inner faces of the front and rear end members 8 and 9.

The rear member 9 of the coop is constructed of an imperforate sheet metal blank and is also triangular in shape, its dimensions being slightly in excess of those of the body member. The side edges of this member are turned in throughout their entire length, so as to form flanges 11 arranged to fit over the rear flanges formed upon said body member, thereby holding the rear member in place. The front member 8 is likewise constructed of a triangular blank, and is formed at its side edges with inturned flanges 12 arranged to fit over the flanges upon the front edges of the body member. This member, however, differs from the rear member in that it has formed therein a triangular opening 13 across which is disposed a strip of wire-netting 1 1, and also in that a portion of its lower edge is cut away to provide a door or passage 15 through which the young chickens can pass into or out of the coop. The apex of the opening 13 lies directly in line with that of the front member, as shown in Fig. 1.

It will be thus apparent that both end members can be readily fitted upon the corresponding side edges of the body member, and the two sets of flanges 1210, and 1110 engaged with each other, thus form ing a compact coop, no pins, rings, latches or other fastening devices being necessary to fasten the members of the coop together and retain the same in place. The members may likewise be detached from each other with equal readiness when the coop is to be cleaned or shipped.

By the construction of the body member 7 from a single strip of resilient metal and of triangular shape, the upper detached edges of the sides of the said body are bindingly brought together when the front and rear end members 8 and 9, respectively are forced into position, thereby completing the coop. It will be apparent that the end members 8 and 9 may be as readily removed from the said body portion as they are applied thereto.

The invention also contemplates the provision of a device for closing the passage 15,

entering the coop arid injuring the young chickens. To this end, a metal door 16 or cover plate, provided with a handle 17 is employed, the door having its side edges formed with inbent flanges 18 which, when the door is in place, fit over the flanges 12 with which the front member 8 is provided,

as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the height of 1 the door being such that the top portion of the opening 13 is exposed, to admit air into the coop. The door is also designed for use in rainy weather.

The body member 7 is preferably provided wit-h a handle 19 located at the apex thereof, (Fig. 1) by means of which the coop may be lifted bodily and carried from one point to another.

\Vith the construction described, it will be noted that the flanges of the side portions close bindingly the upper open ends of the side portion when the parts are assembled.

What is claimed is 1. A coop comprising a body portion conformed'of a single piece of resilient metal bent upon itself to form yielding side portions converging upwardly and having their ends provided with laterally extending en a 'ement with the flan es of the side portions to bindingly close the upper open ends of said side portions when the parts are properly assembled.

2. A coop comprising a body portion conformed of a single piece of metal bent upon itself to form side portions converging upwardly and having their ends provided with laterally extending flanges, a bottom be- .tween said slde portions, and end portions corresponding in shape to the cross section of said body portion and having their upwardly flat converging sides bent inwardly for detachable interlocking engagement with the flanges of the side portions to bindingly close the upper open ends of said side portions when the parts are properly assembled.
