Description

May 31, 1932- o. L. BARTLETT CLOSURE PLUG FOR ROLLS Filed March 20, 195] Oscarlkfiaraei INVENTOR T ATTORNEY S Patented May 31, 1932 mmmwab OSCAR L. BARTLETT, F MOUND CITY, ILLINOIS CLOSURE PLUG FOR ROLLS Application filed March 20, 1931. Serial No. 524,139.
This invention relates to closures especially adapted for the ends of rolls of sheet mate rial, wherein the accessories such as nails, ce' ment and the like used in conjunction with the material will be efiiciently retained within the rolls during shipment and has for the primary object, the provision of a device of the above stated character which may be easily and quickly applied and will effectively seal the ends of the roll to prevent displacement of the accessories therefrom and the admission of rain or foreign matter thereto.
Another object of this invention is the pro vision of securing means for the closures which will be self-locking and which may be easily and quickly detached from the roll when desiring to remove the closures so as to obtain the accessories.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a closure plug of the above stated character which will be simple, durable and efficient and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my inven- 33 tion, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a roll of sheet material having its ends closed by closure plugs constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view illustrating the same and showing the accessories confined within the roll.
Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating one of the closure plugs with a self-locking fastener applied thereto.
Figure 4 is a plan view illustrating the blank of a fastener.
Figure 5 is an end view illustrating a slight modification of my invention.
Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating a modified form of fastener.
Figure 7 is a detail sectional view illustrating another modified form of my invention.
Referring in detail to the drawings the numeral 1 indicates a roll of sheet material which may be of any desired character and when shipping and selling such material it is desirable by the seller to furnish accessories for the material such as nails, cement and the like and these accessories are placed within the roll as shown in Figure 1 and to prevent their accidental displacement and to protect the accessories from weather elements, closure plugs 2 are provided and are inserted in each end of the roll as clearly shown in Figure 2.
The closure plugs are identical in construction and reference to one specifically is thought sufficient for both. A plug 2 includes a body 3 having an annular flange 4 at one end to engage the roll of sheet material 4 as clearly shown in Figure 1 to effectively seal the space formed within the roll. The inner end of the plug 3 is tapered as shown at 5 and secured to the inner end of the plug is a fastener 6 which projects beyond opposite sides of the plug and has formed thereon an nularly disposed tines 7 overlying the bevelled face 5 and having their free ends biting into the material of the roll as clearly shown in Figure 2 and which will prevent the removal of the closure plug from the roll. The plug 2 is provided with an opening 7 extending centrally therefrom and the fastener 6 overlies the inner end of the opening and is secured to the plug by small nails or like fasteners 8 whereby on the insertion of a suitable instrument 9 through the opening 7 the fastener can be removed from the inner end of the plug freeing the plug that it may be easily removed from the end of the roll.
As shown in Figure 5 a pair of fasteners 6 may be secured to the inner end of the plug and arranged at right angles to each other. The fasteners 6 when arranged as shown in Figure 5 are secured to the inner ends of the plug by the fasteners 8 and overlie the inner end of the opening 7 whereby the instrument 9 is inserted through the opening and both fasteners will be detached from the plug.
As shown in Figure 6 the fastener 6 may have tines 10 struck up therefrom for the purpose of being inserted in the end of the plug for retaining the fastener thereon. It is to be understood that the fastener is applied to the end of the plug by the inserting of the plug in the roll and owing to the an-- nularly related tines 7 the plug can be easily inserted in the roll but will be prevented from being removed therefrom due to the tines biting into the material of the roll.
Referring to Figure 7 the plug 11 is of 1101- low formation and preferably constructed of wood and includes an outer flange 12 and an inner wall 13 centrally apertured as shown at 14: and also provided with openings located adjacent the aperture 14. The body of the plug 11 is tapered as shown at 15 to permit the tines on the fastener applied to the inner Wall to bend inwardly when inserting the plug in the roll. The fastener is secured to the inner wall 13 by the tines 10 inserted through the openings adjacent to the central aperture 14 and bent over as clearly shown in Figure 7. By inserting the instrument 5) through the aperture 14 against the fastener, the tines 10 may be caused to straighten and pass through the apertures of the inner wall and thereby detach the fastener from the plug.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A closure for rolls comprising a plug to be inserted in the end of a roll and having an opening therethrough and provided with tapered inner end, a fastening strip detachably secured to the inner end of the plug, tines at the ends of the strip for biting into the roll and overlying the bevelled inner end of the plug so that said tines may fiex inwardly when the plug is inserted in the roll, said strip overlying the opening whereby an instrument may be placed in engagement tliierewith for detaching said strip from the p ug.
2. A closure for rolls comprising a plug to be inserted in the end of a roll and having an opening therethrough, a fastening strip having tongues struck up therefrom and driven into the inner end of the plug, tines on the ends of the strip to bite into the roll, said strip overlying the opening whereby an instrument may be placed in engagement therewith for detaching said strip from the plug.
3. A closure for rolls comprising a hollow body for insertion in the end of a roll, a flange formed on the outer end of the body to engage the end of the roll, an inner wall formed on the body and having a centrally arranged opening and a pair of apertures, a fastening strip engaging said wall, tines struck up from the strip and extending through the apertures and bent to engage the wall, tines at the ends of the strip for biting into the material of the roll, said strip overlying the centrally arranged opening, whereby an instrument may be placed in engagement therewith for?
