The invention relates to identificationtags and more particularly to a construction ineluding a transparent weatherproof case or holder containing a card or ticket bearing the identifying mark, means being provided for preventing accidental displacement of the card or ticket while permitting the same to be easily and readily removed when desired.

The object of the improvement is to provide a device of this kind including a case or holder formed of transparent weatherproof material such as celluloid, cellophane or the like of substantially rectangular shape and 16 open only at one end; a card or ticket bearing the identifying mark being insertable into the case through the open end thereof, cooperating means being provided upon the card and holder for normally retaining the card in place therein while permitting free and easy removal of the card from the holder when desired.

Devices of this kind are adapted for use upon any article where an identifying mark is necessary or desirable and because of the weatherproof construction, are especially adapted for the marking of plants, shrubbery and the like to which the case or holder may be attached by wire or similar means; and since the card or ticket cannot be acciden, tally displaced from the case or holder, the tag will remain in perfect condition regardless of the weather conditions to which it is subjected.

The objects of the invention may be at tained by providing a substantially rectangular case or holder of suitable transparent weatherproof material such as celluloid, cellophane and the like, the card or ticket being preferably formed of opaque fiexible'material such as celluloid and adapted to be slidably received into the case or holder through the open end thereof and having a tongue arranged to be received into an opening or pocket in the holder for automatically locking the card or ticket therein, the tongue being sufficiently flexible to permit the same to be depressed between the thumb and finger to allow the card or ticket to be easily withdrawn when desired.

As shown in Figs. 1, 2 'and 5, the case or 9 holder may be formed from a single sheet blank of transparent celluloid or the like indicated generally at 10, adapted to be folded longitudinally upon the lines 11 and having the ears 12 at one end adapted to be 7 folded inward along the lines 13.

The overlapping longitudinal edge portions ofthe transparent blank may be cemented or otherwise fastened together and an eyelet 14 may be placed through the openings 15 in the blank for closing that end of the blank and providing means for in sertinga wire, cord or the like for attaching theholder to the obj ectto bemarked.

The card orticket 16 is pref'erabl of substantally rectangular shape and i desired, for the purpose of easily inserting the same into and removing itfrom the case'or holder, the corners may be beveled as at 17.

This card or ticket may be made of any suitable material preferably opaque and flexible and is of such size as to permit the same be easily inserted into the case or holder, as best shown in Fig. 1.

- For the purpose. of automatically locking the card or ticket within the holder, a tongue 18, which may be of triangular shape as shown in the drawings, is "formed near the outer end portion of the ticket and pref'erably. bent outward at asligh't angle to the 10 normal plane of the card or ticket so that when the ticket is inserted into the case or holder as far as it will go and then pulled outward, the tongue will be received into one or the other of the pockets 19 formed between the inturned ears 12 and the adjacent side walls of the case or holder, thus preventing withdrawal of the card or ticket.

When it is desired to remove the card from the holder, the same is pushed backward into the holder sufliciently to disengage the tongue 18 from the pocket 19 and the tongue is then pressed into the normal plane of the card or ticket by pressure of the thumb andforefinger upon opposite sides of the case at this point, permitting the card to be withdrawn from the holder without allowing the tongue to engage either of the pockets.

As shown in Figs. 3 and 6, the construction may be simplified by eliminating the inturned ears 12 and providing an opening 20 in one or both side walls of the case or holder to receive the tongue 18, this opening being preferably triangular and disposed as best shown in Fig. 6.

A further modification of the invention is also illustrated in Fig. 6, in which the case or holder may be formed of sheets 21 of suitable transparent material bound together at their edges as by a metal strip 22.

It should be understood that the openings such as 20 may be substituted for the inturned cars 12 in the form of holder shown in Fig. 1, or the inturned ears may be sub stituted for the openings 20 in the form of holder shown in Fig. 6.

From the above it will be obvious that a simple and inexpensive device is provided formarking any class of goods upon which an identification tag may be placed, and which is weather-proof and so constructed that the identification card or ticket, 'while easily and readily replaceable, cannot be accidentally displaced from the holder.

I claim:

1. An identification tag including a holder open at one end and having a transparent portion, and a card arranged to be longitudinally inserted within the'open end of the holder and having a tongue, one wall of the holder having an aperture for engaging said tongue when the card is inserted for preventing removal of the card.

2. An identification tag including a holder open at one end and having a transparent portion, and a card arranged to be longitudinally inserted within the open end of the holder and having a tongue, one wall of the holder having an aperture for engaging said tongue when the card is inserted for preventing removal of the card.

3. An identification tag including'a holder having opposite walls of transparent material, a card receivable within the holder and 5 having a tongue, and means upon each wall of the holder for engaging said tongue for preventing removal of the card.

4:. An identification tag including a holder open at one end and having a transparent portion, a card arranged to be longitudinally inserted within the open end of th holder, a tongue upon one of said memfiers and means upon the other member for engaging said tongue when the card is inserted for preventiin removal of the card.

5. An identification tag including a holder open at one end and having a transparent portion, a card arranged to be longitudinally inserted within the open end of the holder, and a tongue upon one of said members, there being an aperture in the other member for engaging said tongue when the card is inserted for preventing removal of the card.
