BAGGAGE TAG Filed NOV. 1, .1954 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 United States Patent BAGGAGE TAG James A. Anania, Newark, N. J.
Application November 1, 1954, Serial No. 465,872
2 Claims. (Cl. 40-21) This invention deals with a tag for use with baggage and similar objects. More specifically, it relates to a strip tag which is prepared in knock-down condition and which is provided with end and side lockable tabs and a tearable strip serving as a receipt.
This invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 shows a plan view of one embodiment of the invention, while Figure 2 shows a similar view of another embodiment, both of which are depicted in knocked-down condition. Figure 3 depicts the tag of Figure 1 attached to the handle of a piece of luggage. Similar numerals refer to similar pants in the various figures.
Referring again to the drawing, numeral 1 represents a narrow strip of heavy paper, plastic, or other relatively strong sheet material having one end narrowed down at 2 to provide for a round locking tab 18 of width or diameter smaller than that of strip 1. This tab may be inserted in locking relation in straight slot 3 or triangular slot to form an engaging loop which may encompass the handle, tieing cord, or other part of the baggage or parcel to be identified.
The other end 4 of strip 1 terminates in an elongated portion 5, which may be a rectangle wider than strip 1 and I Projecting sideways from approximately the center portion of strip 1 is narrow strip 8 provided with projecting locking tabs at 9 which, when inserted into slot 11 of oppositely-disposed projecting piece 12, will lock in place enabling piece 8 to cover locked tab 18 in triangular slot 10 and thus serve as a protection against accidental or intentional quick opening of locked tab 18. The strip may be scored along lines 13 and 14 to facilitate bending.
In Figure 2, strip 1 terminates at one end with narrower strip 1 serving as a part of locking tab 2 which has projecting edges 15 to lock into slot 18. The central portion of strip 1 adjacent projecting edges 8 and 12 is notched at 16 to facilitate bending of strip 1 around the baggage handle or other anchoring means while tabs 15 are locked into slot 10'. Strips 5 and 5' can carry numbers or similar indicia for identification.
Slot 3 (Figure 1), may be disposed along the length of strip 1, as desired.
I claim:
1. A baggage tag comprising a narrow strip body of sheet material, a locking tab disposed on the end of said strip, means forming a slot disposed approximately midway of said strip and adapted to co-act in locking relationship with said tab, a narrow side strip projecting from the side of said strip body adjacent said slot and terminating with a locking tab, slot-forming means on the strip body adjacent said first-mentioned slot and disposed oppositely from said side strip and co-acting with said locking tab on said side strip to lock said side strip and thereby protect the first-mentioned locked tab, and a wider perforated portion disposed at the other end of said strip body.
2. A baggage tag according to claim 1 in which an additional slot-forming means is disposed between the firstmentioned tab and its co-acting slot means, and in which said first-mentioned tab may be locked.
