INVENTOR Edward :[firoobs A TTORNE Y Fatented May 12, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFier.
SEALING MEANS.
Application filed June 1,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. BROOKS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State oi New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sealing Means, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to seal- .ing means and has more particularly refer ence to an improved cording seal, whether the cord be metallic or fibrous.
The main object and feature of the invention is to reduce the cost of manufacture of such sealing elements and to render it apparent if the device has been tampered with.
In the accompanying drawings the invention is disclosed in a concrete and preferred form in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a device ombodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
l 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but with the cord ends inserted and the lips closed over the cord.
Fig. l is a sectional view on the plane of line 4-4 of Fig.
Fig. 5 is a view showing the efl'eet of tainporing with the seal.
1 indicates a blank of sheetmaterial having a weakened zone composed here of a central elongated slot 2 and scorings 3 extending in opposite directions from the ends of said aperture. 4 denotes two up-' standing lips substantially parallel to the aperture aforesaid, one on each side thereof and in spaced relation thereto so as to admit of the insertion of cord ends 1923. Serial No. 642,729.
The upper ends of said upstanding lips are preterably curved slightly inwardly as shown. Preferably there is a raised portion 6, on each side of the elongated slots, between which and the lips the cord ends are fitted. Also preferably there are two guide lugs 7 acent the outer end of each scoring and separated thereby and from the upstanding lips aforesaid.
The ends of the cord are laid within the lips and between the latter and raised portion 6 after which said lips are bent inwardly and downwardly. Should it now be attempted to tamper with the seal it will break along the line or the weakened Zone as indicated in Fig. 5.
I claim:
A sealing element comprising: a blank of sheet material having a weakened zone composed of a central elongated aperture and scorings extending in opposite directions from the ends of said aperture, there being a slightly raised portion adjacent each side of the aperture, two upstanding lips substantially parallel to the raised portions aforesaid and located one on each side of the aperture and in spaced relation thereto to admit of the insertion ot cord ends, and two guide lugs located adjacent theouter end of each scoring and separated thereby and separated from the upstanding lips aforesaid.
Signed at New York city, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, this 25th day of May, 1923.
EDXVARD J. BROOKS.
