Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 353,441.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALLACE CHARLES YEoMANs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fe Ell, in the county of Lewis and State of WVashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Crates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in the manufacture of crates, whereby the blank for forming the crate is woven flat in single piece, and the connected parts of the blank thus produced can be readily folded and closed to form a complete crate without requiring extra fastening devices.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1. is the plan view of the blank for formin' the crate; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the complete crate, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of a portion of the closing corner of the crate.
The crate is formed from a single blank made of slats wired together, as hereinafter more fully described, and the said single blank in its entirety and as shown in Fig. 1 consists of a back A, a bottom B extending from the front end of the back A, a to G extending from the rear end of the baci A, a side D extending from the left-hand side of the back A, a side E extending from the right-hand side of the back A, and a front F extending from the outer end of the side E.
The several parts A, B, C, D, E and F of the crate are formed of spaced slats A, B, C, D, E and F, respectively, of which the outer ends A, B, C and the inner ends of the slats D, E are wired together by the binding wires G and G, and one or more intermediate binding wires Gr engage the slats A, B, C, as indicated in the drawings. The slats A, D and A ,E alternate at their adjacent ends, and the outer ends of the slats D are connected with each other by binding wires G and a similar binding wire G en gages the outer ends of the slats E and the inner ends of the slats F, the latter alternating with the slats E.
Now in order to fold or set up the crate, the sides D and E are swung upwardly into right angled positions relative to the back A, and then the front F is swung downwardly into a right angled position relative to the sides D and E, and the free ends of the slats F are passed into the loops formed by the binding wires G between the adjacent slats D, and then the rectangular frame thus formed is swung up into a right angled position relative to the bottom B, after which the top C is swung down to close the crate. Now the ends of the binding wire G are preferably extended, as at G and G, to permit of looping these ends G Gr onto the adjacent front slats F so as to securely close the crate, as indicated in Fig. 2. In addition staples H may be driven into the free ends of the slats F at the 100 s of the binding wires G so as to prevent tl ie front slats F from accidentally slipping out of the said loops.
It is understood that any additional binding wires may be used on any one of the parts of the blank, so as to give the desired strength to the crate according to the intended use thereof.
Now by the arrangement, the blanks when in a flat state can be readily packed, one on top of the other, and conveniently shipped from the manufacturer to the consumer in a comparatively small space, thus reducing the expense of transportation to a minimum. It will also be seen that the user can readily set up the blank to form the crate, and to fill and close the same securely, and the receiver of the filled crate after emptying the contents can re-ship the crate in a fiat condition, to allow re-use thereof as often as desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A crate of the class described composed of spaced slats wired together, and comprising a back, a bottom and a top, the slats composing which parts are arranged parallel with each other and secured together by end wires and. intermediate wires, ends the slats of which are interposed between the ends of the slats of the back and secured in place by the end wires of said back, the outer ends of said ends being wired together, and a front the slats of which are interposed between the outer ends of the slats of one of the ends, the r In testimony whereof I have signed my other ends of said slats being adapted to be name to this specification in the presence of interposed between the outer ends of the tWo subscribing Witnesses.
