Description

(ModeL) P. M. COLLINS.
STOVE COVER AND LIFTER.
No. 368,072. Patented Augp9, 1887..
1%?2275555421 M aFa/f w UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS M. COLLINS, OF TROY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TORATHBONE,
SARD & 00., OF ALBANY, NEV YORK.
STOVE COVER AND LIIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,072, dated August 9, 1887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. COLLINS, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new 5 and useful Improvements in Stove Covers and Lifters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it pertains to make and I use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this speci.- fication.
My invention is an improvement in stove covers and lifters; and it consists in the com-.
I bination of the lifter having a flange formed on its under side and projections or flanges extending from opposite edges, so as to catch over the top of the plate upon opposite sides of the lifting-pocket,with the stove-plate hav- 2:: ing a groove formed at one end of the liftingpockct, so as to correspond to the flange on the under side of the lifter, and the inwardlyprojecting flanges to catch over the opposite edges of the lower end of the lifter, as will be 2 5 more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to form a flange upon the lower end of the litter and a corresponding groove in one end of the lifterpocket for the purpose of preventing the cover from turning upon the lifter and dropping off, as is frequently the case with lifters which have no means of preventing the plate from turning while being moved about.
Figure l is a vertical section taken through 3 5 the lower end of the lifter and the stove-cover.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the stove lifter and cover. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the pocket in the stove-cover. Fig. 4 is an inverted view of the operating end of the stove-lifter.
A represents a stove-cover, which is provided with the usual pocket,B, to receive the end of' the lifter. Projecting inwardly from opposite sides of this pocket, at or near its center, are the projections O, which catch over 5 the top of the lower end of the lifter, and thus connect the plate and lifter together. In the outerend of the pocket is formed a groove,D, to receive the flange, which is formed on the under side of the lifter, and thus prevent the cover from turning upon the lifter while be ing moved about. Instead of the groove D,
which is here shown in the end of the pocket,
a flange may be used, in which case a groove will be made in the end of the lifter instead of a flange, as is here shown. 5 Upon opposite edges, near the lower end of the lifter F, are formed the wings or projections G, which catch over opposite edges of the pocket upon the top ofthe plate, and
thus give the lifter a broad bearing upon the cover and assist in preventing the cover from turning while being carried by the lifter.
Upon the under side of the lifter is formed the flange H, which fltsin the groove D in the end of the pocket, and assists in holding the 6 cover solidly in position while upon the end of the lifter. In case a flange should be formed in the end of the pocket, a groove may be made on the under side of the end of the lifter instead of the flange here shown. I
The flange, the corresponding groove, and the projections G, which catch over opposite sides of the edges of'the pocket, prevent all possibility of the cover turning upon the lifter, as very frequently happens where devices of this kind are in use.
Having thus described my invention, I clairn- 1. The combination of astove-cover having a groove formed in the end of its pocket and provided with the projections O to catch over opposite sides of the operating end of the lifter, with a stove-lifter having a corresponding flange formed on the under side of its end to correspond to the groove, substantially as 8 shown.
I 2. The combination of the stove-cover provided with the lifting-pocket having projections extending from opposite sides and provided with a-groove in one end, with a lifter 0 having a flange upon its under side and pro jections upon opposite edges to catch over the -top of the plate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affi'x my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANQIS M. COLLINS.
