Description

H. S. REYNOLDS.
Goal Scuttle.
No. 104,885.- Patented June 28, 1870.
iiltniteil $121M HENRY S. REYNOLDS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 104,885, dated June 28, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-SCUTTLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hssnv S. REYNOLDS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented. a new and useful Improvement in Goal-scuttles, Buckets, and other vessels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which ,will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing lin'i'ning part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of this invention.
Figure 2 is a detached section of the bottom.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a coal-scuttle, the bottom of which is stamped up of sheet-metal with an out-- wardly projecting rim, and downwardly projecting flange, while the body of the scuttle and the baserim are both provided with internal recesses, formed by rising beads near their adjoining edges, in such a manner that the recess of the body is capable of retaining the rim of the bottom, while the flange of said bottom forms the guide for the baserim, and serves to join the same firmly to the body by hammering its edge over into the recess of said base-rim, thereby producing a firm and durable connection between the several parts of the scuttle, without the use of solder or of rivets.
In the drawing, the. letter A designates thc body of my coal-scuttle, B is the bottom, and C is the baserim. All these parts are made of sheet-iron, or any other suitable sheet-metal, and in the body A is produced a recess, a, near its bottom edge, while the baserim 0 has a similar recess, 1;, near its top edge (see fig. 1) said recesses being formed by producing outwardly projecting beads at the proper places.
The bottom B is stamped up, or otherwise produced out of sheet-metal, and it is provided with a rim, 0, and a downwardly projecting flange, d, best seen in fig. 2.
The rim c isintendcd to catch in'the recess a of the body A, while the flange (1 forms a guide for the baserim, and serves to unite the body and the base-rim firmly together. This object is effected by adjusting the baserim over the flange of the bottom,'and then hammering the edge of said flange outward into the recess b of the baserim, as shown in .fig. 1.
By these means a coal-scuttle is obtained which cm be made light and comparatively cheap, and which is very durable, since the joint between the several parts of thescuttle is produced without solder or rivet, and, furthermore, said joint is composed of five thicknesses of metal, so that it is not liable to give out.
It is obvious that this improvementis applicable to sheet-metal vessels of various kinds.
What- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Leiters Patent. is
1. A bottom for a sheet-metal vessel, said bottom being struck up and provided with a resting-rim, c, and a confining-flange, 11, substantially as described, as a new article of manufacture.
2. The combination of the recessed body A, and recessed base-rim O, with the rim 0 and flange d of the bot-tom B, substantially in the manner herein set forth.
This specification signed by me this 26th day of January, 1870 HENRY S. REYNOLDS.
