Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JOHN ROOT, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ANDREW MARTIN, OF SAME PLACE.
IM PROVED PAPER BOX.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 103,932, dated J une 7, 1870.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Boor, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in securing the parts of paper boxes together where they lap each other 5 and consists in fastening them by metal clasps consisting of strips of thin sheet metal bent over the edges and pressed together, so as to clamp the parts between them.
Figure 1 is a top view of part of a paper box with the bottom or cover fastened according to my improvements. Fi g. 2 is a similar view of a part of a box in which the paper is cut and folded dierently and secured in the same way, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of a box similarly fastened.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the paper of which the box is made. It may be cut and folded in any approved way, so that the parts to be fastened lap each other.
B represents the clasps or fastenings. They are made of short, narrow, and thin strips of sheet'metal, and'bent over the edges of t-he parts of the paper lapping together, as clearly shown in the drawing, and pressed together by a blow of a hammer, or in a press or otherwise, to cause them to clamp the paper tightly between them. This method of fastening is very simple and cheap, and may be done very rapidly.
Hitherto theseboxeshave mostlybeenpasted together, the paste damping the paper, and they have to be carefully put away and dried afterward, which requires sometime and makes unnecessary handling; besides the paste does not always stick.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentv The paper A and sheet-metal clasps B, respectively bent and fitted together in the manner specified, to form the im proved box shown and described.
JOHN ROOT.
