No. 195,976. Patented Oct. 9, 1877.

N-PEI'ERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. FRANK BLY, OF OHAUTAUQUA, NEW YORK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,976, dated October 9, 1877; application filed June 7, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. FRANK BLY, of the town of Chautauqua, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Butter-Packages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention, which has for its object to provide a jacket for conical butter-packages, consists in the application of heavy paper formed in a single piece. Said device is further provided with paper hoops formed of single strips of paper, the two ends of which are fastened together, and, if preferred, to said jacket, with rivets clinched on the under side. These jackets, which are formed independently of the metal packages, are capable of being adjusted at will, and they may be made of different sizes, to suit the trade.
In the annexed drawings, which make a part of this specification, Figure 1 is partly a side elevation and partly a sectional elevation of my package. A shows a metallic pail or tub, and B shows a section of the heavy paper casing, which is a bent hoop of heavy prepared paper, covering the metallic tub from top to bottom, and furnished with extra narrow paper hoops 0, one at the top and one at the bottom. These hoops O are formed of single pieces of paper fastened together at their ends, with rivets a, before being placed over the jacket.
Fig. 2 shows the cover to the package, and is made of two circular pieces of board, and placed one (the larger) upon the other, (the smaller,) with the grain in the timber of one running across the grain in the other, and then nailed through with a clinch-nail, or fastened together with screws, thereby making a cover that cannot warp or bend, and doing away with cleats or pieces across the top, as in other covers, and fitting the top of the package by having the smaller board setting down into the tub, and the larger board lying on the top, thereby tbrming a shoulder or rabbeted edge, and making a cover that cannot warp or split in transportation, or from the effect of heat or weather, and is fastened to the package in any manner preferred.
I disclaim the cover which I show and dcscribe in my specification and drawin Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the adj ust able jacket B for butter-packages, conical in form, and provided with paper hoops C, to be slipped on over said jacket, to hold it in position, as and for the purpose set forth.
J. FRANK BLY.
