Description

tnitzr 3eme? WILLIAM J.. CLARKLOF LENA, ILLINOIS,
-Letters Patent No. 112,784, dated-March 21, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN EGG AND FRUIT-CARRlERS.
lThe Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may conce/r11.:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. CLARK, of Lena, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Peach and Egg-Carrier;l
and I herebydeclare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to an improved constructionl and arrangement of boxes or compartments for the transportation of' peaches, eggs, or other similar articles needing careful usage iu movingr and handling.
Figures 1 and 2 represent plan views of my improved carrier; v
Figure 3, a central vertical section and Figure 4, a front elevation of the face-plate.
The materials of which the compartments are made may be pasteboard, paper, or any analogous material,-
rIhe form of theseries of nests or compartments, as shown in-g. 1, is made of a strip of paper or pasteboard, A, with bent strips B attached thereto, as shown in the figures, the partsv being so arranged, it' preferred, as to leave a space, x, between the bent outer compartments, and the whole resembling, in plan, a yoke with the bows in place. These may be attached to each other, as shown in g. 1, s, the apices of the bows being fastened to the face-board ofthe contiguous set.
In ng. 2 is 'represented a modification more particularly intended for round packages. It differs from the other form in having the bent portions placed side by side, without leaving any space between, and admits of attaching two`bent parts in the same slot in the face-board.
Themethod of attaching the parts, shown in figs. 1 and 2,'-is by slotting the paper half way and locking the slots into each other, as clearly shown. l y
The face-plate is out as shown in fig. 4, the slots l 1 receiving the slotted edges of one bent part, and 2 2 those of another. These need no other fastening,
being held by the several layers, and the top and bottom of the box in which they are packed, from rising out of place. l
1n tig. 1, 1, the method of attachment shown is by meanslof wire, which is passed through the center of the strip, and bent up on one sideaud down on the other, the ends beingturned over the edges. The bent strip in this case need not be cut, but simply bentin the form of two bows, the central straight part litting against the straight face-board.v This form' may also be cheaply and easily sewed together. In this no notches or slots are needed, the .ends being simply lapped and attached as described.
When one layer oft-bese compartments is placed in a box I place over them the partition-board O, which forms a cover `for the lower, andl bottom for the next series. Its perforations allow free circulation of'air, and a similar board is interposedon edge between the sets.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new -and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
'A series of compartments formed of a face-plate of paper, or similar material, and a series of bent pieces attached thereto, forming the main portion ofthe compartments, as set forth.l
This specification signed and witnessed this 7th day of June, 1870.
lW. J. CLARK.
