BOX.
Patented March 23, 1909.
Serial No. 367,077.
To all whom it n'ra'y concern:
Be itknown that I, EMMA L. Ansonen, a citizen of the United States, residing at N ewaygo, in the county of Ncwaygo and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper box construction especially adapted for small lruits, berries and the like.
The box is of a knock-down style, the bottom being readily detachable and the sides folding flat so that the boxes can be shipped very readily and set up at place of delivery.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the Figure l is a plan view oi the blank from which the sides of the box are formed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bottom. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a complete box, portions of the side and of the bottom being broken away to more clearly show the construction.
In these drawings the sides A are formed of a blank bent transversely upon the dotted lines of Fig. 1 thus forming the sides 1, 2, 3, and 4. The sides 1 and 3 have adjacent the lower edge of the blank two longitudinal slots B which extend "from the lines of fold or bend A to points adjacent the center line of the side of the box. The sides 2 and d have near the lower edge a centrally arranged eurved slot which forms a tongue C, said tongue being bent inwardly when the box is set up. The bottom of the box E is rectangular in form and from opposite sides is cut inwardly as shown at E, thus forming upon opposite sides two short parallel slots 1 between which are formed tongues The remaining marginal portions E of the sides are in the completed box bent downwardly while the tongues E are bent upwardly, as is shown in Fig. 3. The bottom has its corslotted sides have their margins E also bent upwardly.
In assembling the box the portions E of the bottom are passed through the slots B and bent downwardly upon the outside of I the box, the tongues E being bent upwardly upon the inner side of the box and the marginal portions E also bending upwardly. l
The tongues C are bent inwardly and form supports for the bottom E to rest upon, and it will be noted that the tongues 0 support the sides of the bottom E adjacent the sides provided with the portions E so that each alternate side ol the bottom is supported by tongues formed upon the bottom and upon the sides respectively.
What I claim is:
l. A box consisting of sides having alternate sides slotted and the remaining sides provided with inwardly extending tongues, and a bottom fitting within the sides and resting upon said tongues, said bottom being provided with marginal portions passing through the slots of the sides and bent down upon the outer side of the box.
2. A paper box having sides formed of a blank bent transversely and forming four sides two of which are slotted, the slots being parallel to and adjacent the lower edges of the sides, and two of said sides being cut to form inwardly extending tongues, said tongues extending inwardly in substantially the same horizontal plane as the slots, and a bottom having short parallel slots extending inwardly upon opposite sides of the bottoms thereby forming upwardly extending tongues between the said slots and downwardly extending tongues upon opposite sides of the upwardly extending tongues, the said bottom resting upon the tongues formed upon the sides of the box, and the downwardly bent tongues of the bottom passing through the slots formed in the sides of the box.
3. A box of the kind described having two of its sides provided with inwardly extending tongues, each of the remaining sides being provided with two horizontal slots arranged adjacent the sides bearing the tongues, and a bottom resting upon said tongues, said bottom being cut to provide marginal portions adapted to pass through the slots of the sides, said portions being bent downwardly upon the outside of the box, and the remaining marginal portions of the bottom being bent upwardly upon the inner side of the box.
EMMA L. ANSORGE.
