J. J. LEECH.
` GOMPARTMBNT BOX. No. 459,587. Patented Sept. 15, 1891.
ATTO EVS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. LEEOII, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
COM PARTM ENT-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,587, dated September 15, 1891.
Application iiled February 10, 1891. Serial No. 380,980. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. LEECH, of the city, county, and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compartment-Boxes, of which the following is a specification. f
This invention relate/s to an improved tray that is divided into compartments so as to receive caramel or other candies and hold them there in a reliable manner without forming contact with each other; and the invention consists of a tray in which the candies are stored away in compartments formed by transverse and longitudinal partitions, the longitudinal partitions being made double and folded up from a continuous sheet of paper, while the transverse partitions are bent up from the bottom of said sheet by providing the same with U-shaped slits, the longitudinal and transverse partitions being made from one blank, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally be pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved compartment-box for candies and other articles, showing the same partly filled with candies, partly covered with a top sheet, and partly uniilled. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of a portion ot' the box, drawn on alarger scale. Fig. 3 is a top View of a portion of the blank from which the partitions which form the compartments of the box are made, and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section of a portion of the boX.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a flat box, of pasteboard or other suitable material, in which caraniels or other candies are to be stored. The compartments in the box consist of a tray formed of a continuous sheet B of wax or parafine paper, as shown in Fig.
4, which is provided with longitudinal lines of creases or depressions b', about which the sheet is folded up so as to form by inverted- U -shaped folds double longitudinal partitionwalls b,while the transverse single partitions d are formed of short pieces, which are bent 5o up integrally from the sheet by cutting U- shaped slits d into the same and connecting the ends of the slits by lines of creases or depressions cl2, as shown in Fig. 3. When the short transverse partitions d, which extend between the adjacent longitudinal partitions b are bent up, a number of compartments or cells are formed, in which the caramels or other candies are readily stored away. They are then covered by a piece of wax or parat- 6o fine paper C, as shown in Fig. l. By constructing the box and the compartments on the same or a larger scale it can also be used for shipping larger articles, such as eggs,. fruits, and the like, in which case, however, stout paper, sheet metal, or other suitable niaterial has to be usedfor making the compartments 0r cells.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 7o Patent A tray consisting of a sheet provided with one set of double partitions formed by inverted-U-shaped folds of said sheet and with another set of single partitions disposed be- '7 5 tween those of the first set and at angles thereto, the partitions of the second set being integral with said sheet, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 8o my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN J. LEECH.
