Description

L. BRASSEUR.
EGG NBST OR FILLER. APPLICATION IEILBI) IBB.17, 1910.
Patented Dec.20, 1910.
LEON BRASSEUR, OF BROOKLYN, YORK.
EGrG-NESI OR FILLER.
Specifieafi0n of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 20, 1910.
Application filed leoruary 17, 1910. Serial No. 544,424.
T0 all whom it may c0 ncem:
Be it known that I, LEON BRASSEUR, a subject of the King of Belgium, residing at Broolflyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Egg-Nests or Fillers, of which the following is a specificati0n.
This invention is designed to provide a novcl form of filler or nest for boxes or packages to facilitate the handling and carrying ol eggs, whereby the liability of breakage is reduced to the smallest amount possible.
The invention contemplates a filler which may be cheaply and readily formed of a single blank without necessitating the assemblage of a number of parts or the formation et joints and Which at the same time may fold into a small space to admit of a large number being arranged in compact forma so as not to occupy valuable space.
The invention consists Of a filler or nest formed from a single blank of cardboard or similar sheet material comprising a longitudinal Web and lateral folds projecting from opposite sides thereof arranged to form spaces so that When the filler is placed in a box, container or package, cells or compartments are provided for reception of individual eggs or like articles to be packed so as to be safely and conveniently handled without damage.
The invention further contemplates a nest or filler oonsisting of a single blank doubled upon itself midway of its longitudinal edges and having portions of each folded portion laterally defiected to provide extensions which form partitions for subdividing the spaces upon opposite sides of the longitudinal web or partition resulting from folding the blank upon itself longitudinafly, said lateral extensions consisting specifically of folds oi approximately V-for1n and said folds being opposicely disposed.
The invention consists of the novel features, det-ails of construction and combination o:f parts, Which hereinafcer will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appehded daim.
Referring to the drawing, forming a part of the application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box or carrier provided with a filler or nest embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the filler or nest. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank showing the several cuts and crease lines. a transverse section of the filler.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.
The box, package, or container 1 may be of any construction and preferably consists of the type formed of a single blank adapted to be folded into the required form and secured by interlocking flaps in the well known manner.
The present invention relates more particularly to the nest or filler whereby the box is subdivided into cells or compartments for reception of the individual eggs or other articles to be placed therein for safe han dling and carrying. The filler or nest is formed 01 a blank substantially as shown in Fig. 8, the same being oblong and consisting of a strip of cardb0ard or other sheet material suitable for the purpose. The blank has midway of its longitudinal edges a series of cuts 2 and crease lines 3, the latter being in line with the cuts 2. A series of crease lines l extend transversely of the blank at a right angle to the edges thereof and are disposed midway the ends of the cuts 2. Other crease liners 5 extend transversely of the blank parallel with the crease lines 4: and at tive cuts 2.
Fig. 4 is The cuts 2 and the several crease lines 3, 4 and 5 may be formed in any 1nanner. The blanks formed in the manner set forth may be placed one upon the other in a pile.
When it is desired to form a blank into a filler, or nest, it is folded longitudinally along the center line, after which the 'parts opposite the cuts 2 are folded upon the crease lines 4L and 5, forming the lateral folds 6. Vhcn the blank is folded upon itself longitudinally a Web 7 is formed interrupted at intervals in its length by lateral folds 6, which unitedly are of a length t0 extencl across the container 1, so as to subdivide the same in conjunction with the longitudinal partition 7 into a plurality of cells or compartments for receiving the individual articlos.
The lateral folds 6 are substantiafly of V- form, hence it Will be understood that the length of the filler may vary so that it may be adapted to boxes varying in size within certain limits without necessitating cutting or trimming of the filler to adapt the same the extremities of the respecto a smaller box. It is also understood that the construction is such as to admit of the colls or compartments adapting themselves t0 varying sizes of eggs or other articles, so that a small egg and a large egg may occupy cells or compart1nents best adapted to their dimensions.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accoanpanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of ope1ation Will be readily ap parent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and Wliile I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device WhiCh I 110W consider to be tlie embocliment thereof, I desire to have it, understood that the device shown is 1nerely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hcreto.
Having thus described the invention what clai1ned as new, is 2 A nest or filler for boxes or containers for1ned of a blank of oblong shape having a series of cuts and crease lines midway of its longitudinal edges, the cuts alternating with the c1ease lines and in the sa1ne straight line therewith, said blank having a serics 02C transverse crease fines arranged at the extremities and intermediate of the extremities of the several cuts, the blank being olcled longituclinally in line with the longitudinal cuts and crease lines and having the p01- tions opposite the cuts formed into laterally extending V-folds.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of txvo WlLHGSSGS.
LEON BRASSEUR.
