-EGG-CARRI ER FILLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,664, dated January 10, 1893. Application filed February 3, 1892. Serial No. 420,167. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN S. SHEPERD, of Vincennes, county of Knox, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Carrier Fillers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like figures refer to like parts.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of what are known as egg carrier fillers, and will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the fillers ready for use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of two of the strips in position for locking together.
In detail, (1) are horizontal strips, having a series of vertical slots (2) formed from their center to near the upper edge, and terminating in slits (3,) which extend through the upper edge of the strip.
(4) are transverse strips provided with vertical slots 5 from the center to the lower edge, and also with notches or recesses (6) in line with the slots, and the entire filler is made up of these two pieces into a square section, as shown in Fig. 1, forming therein a number of smaller cells for the reception of eggs.
In putting the filler together by hand, two of the strips (1 and 4) are placed in respect to each other as shown in Fig. 2, and the slot (2) with its curved slit (3) in the strip (1) is opened, and the strip (4:) with its slots (5) is passed down into that of the strip (1,) causing them to interlock at these points, as shown in Fig. 1, and when in place the hook (3) on the lower strip springs back into place, preventing the removal of the strip (4) until the slot in the strip (1) be opened as it was on the entrance of the strip (4,) and all the strips forming the filler are put together in this way, and when completed it makes practically a solid paste-board filler, as the interlocking is complete on the lines of all the joints thus formed, and the hook part of the curved slit prevents them from separating.
The strips may be made of paste-board, veneer, or any other suitable material, and when set up and connected in the manner herein described makes a firm and secure structure, and one which can be readily collapsed for shipment, and a large number be packed in a small space for such purpose, the length and width of these strips being varied according to the requirements of any particular case.
Nhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is the following: M
An egg carrier filler, consisting of .a series ofstrips having hooks formed ofcurvedcuts in their upperedges slots extending therefrom to the center of the strips, the base of the hooks being at right angles to such slots, in combination with a series of strips having yertical slots extending from the lower edge to their center, and notches in their upper edge, the base of such notches being at right angles to the vertical slots, such strips adapted to be interlocked with the first, substantially as shown and described.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of January, 1892.
