H. W. GOODNOWQ Box.
No. 225,978 Patented Mar. 30, 1880.
WL'Zrzm-"y&r:
N4 PETERS. FHOTO UTNOGRAPNER, WASHINGTDN. D. C.
UNITED STATES HENRY W. GOODNOW, OF CLINTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,978, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed January 24, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. Goonnow, of Olinton,in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved box; Fig. 2, a plan view of the blank from which it is formed. Fig. 3is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved box.
This invention is especially designed for holding general merchandise; and it consists in a novel construction of box and means for carrying the same, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, A represents the blank from which the box is formed, having two of its opposite edges provided with a series of holes, a, so that when said edges are brought together to form the body of the box they can be secured by a piece of tape or twine, 0, passing through the holes in both edges, and it may be passed one or more times from each end hole over the lapped edges and back through the end hole, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.-
The blank is also provided with circular pieces or flaps, forming the bottom and top covers for the box, which are secured in position, after the box is filled, by the twine or tape 0 passing across the out-side thereof and through the holes 61 cl in the box, the ends of the tape or twine secured together, as shown in Fig. 1, to form a handle by which the box can be car ried.
The blank is of such shape as to form a frustoconical box, and the end holes, a, and holes (Z should be provided with eyelets, in order to prevent the tape or twine tearing them out when the box is formed from paper-board.
Having thus fully described my invention,
.what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described box, consisting of a single blank, A, provided with the flaps I) b, forming the coiers for the box, the two opposite edges having a series of holes, a, and the adjacent edges holes 6?, and of a tape or twine, c, securing the edges of the box together, the covers in position, and constituting a means for carrying the box, substantially as specified.
