Description

(Nd Model.) Y W. R. WILGOX 8: N, E. BROWN."
BUTTER TRAY.
No. 258,183. Patented May 16, 1882.
A TORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R. WILOOX AND NORMAN E. BROWN, OF ST. JOSEPH, MICHIGAN.
BUTTER-TRAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 258,183, dated May 16, 1882. Application filed April 1, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WM. R. WILCOX and NORMAN E. BROWN, both citizens of the United States, of St. Joseph, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Butter-Trays; and we do hereby declare that the'foliowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a. vertical sectional view of our improved dish. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, and Fig. 3 is aplan view, showingthe dish in blank form.
This invention has relation to butter-trays for grocers and other dealers and it consists in the formation of the interrupted transverse scoring at each end of the body portion, consisting of independent score-sections between the body and end laps, the middle score-section being set back from the lateral score-sections a distance equal to the thickness of the stock.
The invention also consists, in connection with the interrupted score, of the lateral end laps folded upon each other and upon the middle lap, forming a triple-fold handle portion, so connected and braced as to possess considerable strength, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a I designates the body portion of the tray, having at each end a middle end lap or tongue portion, 1), and on each side thereof a lateral end lap, 0, these laps being formed by two converging cuts or slits, d, which separate the tapering middle tongue from the lateral laps.
The transverse interrupted scoring 0 is done on the under side of the blank where the laps join the body portion, and the scoriu g consists of three independent score-sections, whereof the middle score-section, g, is set back from the lateral score-sections g byadistance equal to the thickness of the stock of which the trays are made, as indicated at h. The scoring is preferably done on curved lines, outwardly diverging at each end, or at the bases of the lat eral laps, in order that when these lateral laps are bent up in forming the end wall they shall extend to and dle lap.
The tray is formed from the blank by bending the middle tongue upward in an oblique position, and then bending the lateral laps c upward and toward each other until they overlap across the middle and exterior of the middle tongue, b, when the three thicknesses are fastened together by a staple orbentwire, lc. In this operation the lateral score-sections being outside the middle scoresection, no strain is caused in the corners h when the lateral laps are bent and joined outside of themiddle lap, and therefore the stock is not liable to split from the corners inward. Furthermore, as the transverse bends of the laps are not on the same line, when the laps are fastened together they are mutually bracedand hold their relative position with much more firmness than it the scoring were continuous. Where the lateral laps are secured to each other and to the middle lap, a handle portion is formed at thejunction, consisting of three thicknesses of the stock, well braced and having considerable strength.
Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A butter-tray having at each end of the body portion the interrupted transverse scoring, consisting of the independent score-sections between the body portion and end laps, the middle score-section being set back from the lateral score-sections a distance equal to the thickness of the stock, substantially as specified.
past the central line of the mid- 2. A grocers tray having the interrupted score and the lateral end laps folded upon each other and upon the middlelap and secured together, forming a triple-fold connected and braced handleportion, substantially as speci- In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
