Description
@met dimite.
OLIF ABELL, WOLCOTT, VERMONT.
Letters Patent No. 101,804, dat-ell April l2, 1870.
IMPROVED WOODEN BOX.
The Schedule referred toin th'ese Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all u'hom Iit may concern Be it known that I, OLIF ABELL, of Wolcott, in the county of Lamoille and in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Manuieturing Wooden Boxes; and do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention eonsistsin manufacturing wooden boxes by winding one strip of wood lengthwise around a mandrel, and another strip spirally l around the former; and also in the manner of forni-r ing eit-her the bottom or cover or both of two pieces, with the grain running at rightangles and then stamped in aconeave shape. y
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains toy make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of my box, part in section;
Figure 2 is a bottom view;
Figure 3 is a top view of the bottom; and
Figure 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of the lower portion of the box.
Themanuer of ibrming the body of the box is as follows:
A strip of wood, A, is wound lengthwise around the mandrel, the edges meeting snugly and fastened together in any suitable manner.
Another strip, B, then wound spirally around the former and glued to it. Then thus a cylinder is Y formed itis cut in pieces of suitable lengthA for the boxes desired.
If desired, more than one strip of' wood may be wound spirally around 'the first, that is, one outside the other.
The bottom or lid, orboth of then, are formed in the following manner:
Two circular pieces, C C', of wood of suitable dimensions are placed together and glued fast, the grain of one running at -right angles with the grain of the other to prevent warping. The double piece thus formed is stamped into a concave shape and inserted and fastened in the edge ofthe body AB just formed. The shape of this double bottom renders the box very strong, as its tendency will be to push" outward, and consequently cannot come loose as quick as is otherwise the ease.
These boxes may be made so as to have the lid I).
lap over on the outside box, or present an even surface with the same, iu which latter ease the body of the box will be provided with an inside cylinder constructed in the same nia-nner and projecting above the outside cylinder.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I. A wooden box whose body is formed of a hoop of thin wood, with a narrow strip of thin wood wound spirally around its exterior, as set forth.
2. A wooden box, having its lid or bottom or both formed of two pieces with the grain running at right angles and stamped into a concave shape, substantially fas and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 19t-h day of March, 1870.
