Description

MPETERS. FMOTO-LITHOGMFHER, WASHINGTON, l!4 C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
OLIF ABELII, OF WOLUOTT, VERMONT.
IMPROVED WOODEN BOX.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 101,805, dated April 12, 1870.
` useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Wooden Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speeication.
The nature of my invention consists in manufacturing wooden boxes by winding two or more strips of wood of unequal width in the same direction around a mandrel, and in the manner of forming the double bottom and cover, and the grain ofthe two pieces forming either the lid or the bottom ruiming at right angles.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure lis a side view of a mandrel, showing two strips of wood of unequal width being wound in the same direction around it. Fig. 2 is a section of a completed box. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lid, and Fig/I is an inside view of the same.
In manufacturing wooden boxes a strip, A, is wound around a mandrel, .and another strip, B', is wound on the outside of the strip A, the outside strip being wider than the inside, and glued to it. WVhen v thus a cylinder of two or more strips is formed it is cut in pieces of suitable length for the boxes desired. The bottom() is then inserted and suitably secured.
This bottom is double, being made of two pieces:
of wood, glued together so that the grain of the wood of the two pieces runs at right angles, which entirely prevents warping.
If it is desired to have the lid of the box come ilush with the outside of the box, then another cylinder is formed in the same manner of two or more strips of wood so' much smaller that it will tit inside of the box already formed and glued to the same, said inside cylinder extending for a suitable distance above the' edge of the box. In Fig. 2 I have represented a box thus formed, a being the inside, and b the outside, cylinder, each one being made of two or more strips, as above described.
The lid or cover G is formed of a rim fitting around the project-ing part of the inside cylinder and of the same thickness as the outside. 4
The head of the lid is formed of two pieces in the same manner as described for the bottom. Figs. 3 and 4 show the pieces with the grain running at right angles. If the lid is to t over or around the outside cylinder, itis made that much larger, and the inside cylinder dispensed with.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wooden box whose sides are formed of two or more pieces or strips of wood of unequal widths wound spirally around a mandrel by which the joints are broken, and having a cover with sides formed in like manner, the top and bottom of the box being formed of two pieces of wood placed with the grain at right angles, all as set forth. y Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day of March, 1870.
