IMPBOVED BUTTER BOX.
@the Stimme aferra te iu lgfsc @Enters utrut fmt mating pnt nf tige eine.
TG ALL WHOM 1T MAY CONCEBN-z Be it known that I, WILLXAM B. GUERNSEY, of Norwich, in the county of Chenango, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Butter Boxes; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to 'make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an outside View of a box of my invention, with the parts put together.
Figure 2 is an inside end view of one ofthe parts.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of the middle part.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of this invention is to construct a cheap, neat, and convenient box for containing two small parcels 0r prints of fresh butter in distinct and separate compartments. The box is'made measurably air-tight, for the better protection and preservation of the butter in its original purity and freshness, by the peculiar construction of double walls which are fitted and united very closely together.
The box is made in three parts, A, B, C, as shown at fig. 1. The two ends, A and C, are the bottoms each of one of the compartments, and the middle, B, is a double cover which fits on them. The middle part, B, is formed by bending a thin, even strip of -wood shaving, or sheet of pasteboard, (1,. into a cylindrical shape, the edges or sides of which are cut square, and are united closely' so that the inner and outer surfaces are flush with each other, and they are fastened together by astrip, b, of the same material, gluedover the joint .on the outside, as shown in fig. 1. In this thin circular shell y'or section of a cylinder, B, is fitted a disk, c, which divides it into two compartments and forms a double cover, as .shown at iig. 3. The two ends A and C are made alike, and form the bottom parts of a double box, of which the middle part B is thev double cover. They are also formed in the same manner and of the same material as thev middle part, with bottoms D, or end pieces, glued on the inside in the usual way; but the edges of these inner shells or sectional cylinders d, forming the end pieces A and B, are united by gluing strips e on the inside instead of the outside, as shown at lig. 2. The inside shells ofthe ends A and B are madev nearly half the length of the box when the parts are put together, so that the open ends shall reach the central division c of the double cover B, or, in other words, shall have longitudinal length from x to te, as shown at fig. 1. These inside lshells el are made of a size to fit telescopic fashion in the shell at ofthe middle part or double cover B, and a thin strip of .the same material is fitted as an outside shell, f, on the bottom ends ofthe shells d, extending about halt` way longitudinally, or from x to y, as shown at fig. 1. They are also united flush at the edges in the same manner, and are fastened by gluing strips b over the joints, as shown at tig. 9., and also at fig. l. It will be seen that when the three parts A, B, C, thus constructed, are l'itted together, that they forni a box having two compartments, in which separate prints of butter may be placed, not touching or interfering with each other, when either of them should be taken out of the box. i i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The'eombination of the three cylindrical parts or sections A, B, C, made of thin strips of wood or pasteboard, united ilush at the edges, and fitted together to form a butter box, having two compartments, substantially as herein described. u
The above specication of my invention signed by me this day of September, 1866.
W. B. GUERNSEY. Witnesses:
