Description

NITED' A'IES JEAN H. KASSCHAU, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,514, dated July 10, 1900.
Application filed February 8 1900. Serial No. 4,469- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J EAN H. KASSCHAU, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in boxes of the knockdown class; and the object is to provide a box so constructed that its several members may be rigidly and strongly connected together without the use of nails, screws, hooks, and staples or other metal de- 'Vices.
I will describe a box embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying my invention, showing the cover as partly open. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the box. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the box, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing some of the members as partly disengaged.
The box comprises side members 1 2, end members 3 4, a bottom IIIGT-LUGF-S, and a slid ing cover 6. The side members 1 and 2 are each provided near the top and near the bot tom with channels 7 8, which are substantially T-shaped in eross-section. The bottom 5 has on its opposite edges ribs 9, corresponding in shape to the channels 8 and designed to slide therein. The cover 6 has ribs 10 on its opposite edges, corresponding in shape to the channels 7, in which they are adapted to slide. The end piece 3 has on its opposite ends ribs 11, T-shaped in cross-section and adapted to engage in correspondingly-shaped channels 12, formed in the side pieces near the ends, while the end piece 4 has ribs 13, T-shaped in cross-section and adapted to engage in correspondingly-shaped channels formed in the ends of the side pieces.
At its inner end the cover 6 has a projection 14, designed to engage in a channel 15, extended across the end piece 3 near its upper edge, and the lower edge of this end piece 3 is provided with a tongue or projection 16, adapted to engage in a channel 17, formed in the bottom section 5 near one end, while the opposite end is provided with a similar channel 18 for receiving a tongue or projection 19 on the end piece 4.
In assembling the box the bottom section 5 is to be slid into engagement with the side pieces, after which the end sections are to he slid into their proper places. \Vhen the parts are thus assembled, the cover 6 may be slid into place, as plainly indicated in the drawin gs, and, if desired, a pin 20, of wood or other suitable material, may be passed through a perforation in the cover 6 and into a hole in the end piece 4, thus practically locking the cover in its closed position.
Evidently a box embodying my invention may be quickly put together and as quickly separated when it is desired to pack the several members closely together for reshipping or storage.
\Vhile I have shown a box having its several members made of solid boards, it is to be understood that I may carry out my invention in a crate or open-work box.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A box comprising side members, end members, a bottom member and a sliding cover, the end members, bottom member and the sliding cover having ribs substantially T- shaped in cross-section and having curved or convex outer faces, and the side members having channels in which the ribs are adapted to slide, the said end pieces being each provided at its lower edge with a tongue or projection adapted to engage channels formed in the bottom section near each end thereof, the inner end of the cover having a tongue or projection adapted to engage a channel extending across the corresponding end piece near its upper edge, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JEAN H. KASSOIIAU.
