' No. 276,553. Patented May 1,1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI N. BEWLEY AND RUSSELL L. MACK, OF WELLSBOROUGH, PENNSYL:
VANIA; SAID BEWLEY ASSIGNOR TO SAID MACK.
WAGON-SEAT IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,553, dated May 1, 18 83.
Application filed February l6, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, LEVI N. BEWLEY and RUSSELL L. MACK, citizens of the United States, residing at Wellsborough, in the county of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful \Nagon-Seat Iron, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to wagon-seat irons; and it has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient iron that can be readily secured to the seat.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the iron in position on the seat. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the iron detached.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the seat, which is of the usual construction, having a bottom, B, and inclined edge flange, O, as shown.
D is the iron, which is formed of a single piece, and comprisesa rightangular top plate, E E that is secured on top the flange of the seat by screws F or other suitable means, and has angular extensions or arms G, that project down inside the seat, and are secured to the inner face of the flange and to the top face of the bottom. The top plate, E E protects the edges of'the flange, while the arms brace the latter and retain the said plate E E securely against accidental displacement. The section E of the right-angular top plate, which is secured to the flange at the side of the seat, projects somewhat over the latter on the outside, as shown at H, and is provided at its end with an integral loop, I, that forms a handle, and has its lower end secured to the front edge of thebottom B, as indicated at J.
The advantages of our invention are obvious. It is exceedingly simple in construction 40 and inexpensive, while its form imparts to it durability and strength.
We claim as our invention- 1. As a new article ofmanufacture, the hereiu-described seat-iron, comprising the right- 5 angular top plate having the loop or handle at its end, and the angular arms or extensions, integral with the top plate and extending downwardly therefrom, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the wagon or carriage seat having the bottom board and edge flange, of the seat-iron comprising the rightangular top plate secured tothe top edge of the flange, and the integral angular arms or extensions projecting from the top plate, inside 5 the seat, and secured to the inner face of the flange and to the top face of the bottom, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the seat having the bottom and the edge flange. of the seatiron consisting of the right-angular top plate, one section of which is arranged to project over. the edge of the flange, the extensions or angular arms projecting down inside the seat, and the integral loop or handle arranged on the end of the top plate and having its end secured to the edge of the bottom, as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto aflixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
