. Be it known that I, lViLLIAM B. Fos'rnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Utiea, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Bed-Hanger Construction; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear. and exact description theneof,

which will enable others skilled in the :art.

The purpose of my invention 18 to provide an adjustmile bed hanger of simple and durable construction and one capable of :be-.

A. further purpose isto provide an article of the class described which will be very effective and strong; but is composed of a minimum nuniber of newparts by reason of utilizing in new manner the usual angle iron edge bar of the bed bottom.

A still further object is to combine the few strong simple parts with the angle iron side bar of a bed bottom so that the hanger will be permanently attached to the bed bottom and will always be in the right position to be drawn out for use to any extent desired or may be readily withdrawn or housed so as to have no part projecting beyond the rectangular frame work of the bed bottom and also so as to have no part projecting upwardly or downwardly beyond the thickness of the bed bottom frame.

Further purposes and objects of the invention will appear from the specification and claims herein.

Fig. 1 is a vertical cross section through one edge of a spring bed, embodying my invention, with the lower portion of a coiled spring shown in dotted lines, the section being taken on line 1-1 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 2 is a top view of the parts shown in Fig. 1 without the coiled spring.

Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the edge bar of the bed bottom and through the hanger and attached parts, showing the hanger in housed'position; the section being taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.

At each point inithe :ed-ge bar ;8.=av-hene it desired to have an. adjustable hanger, there is provided an aperture 12 extending through the upper part of the Vertical flange 11 in a horizontal d'irection,-withits upper edge on a level with or close to the level of the lower surface at the horizontal flange 10 'of the edge bar as is particularly shown in Fig.3. This aperture 712 isof' suc'h height and width as to allow the shank or main fiat portion 13 of the L-shaped hanger 14: to readily slide through said aperture.

The hanger 14 is formed of a piece'of 1 strong rigid metal, havingits main port-ion 13 arranged horizontally and having at its outer end a down-turned portion or ear 15, so that the hanger in side elevation has the appearance of an L with a very short base, which, is the ear 15.

Just below the inner end of the hanger 14 there is provided and secured a bracket 16 conveniently formed of a short piece of angle iron having its vertical flange resting against the inner face of the vertical flange 11 of the edge bar of the bed bottom and rigidly and permanently fastened thereto, as by a pair of rivets 17. The horizontal flange or portion of thisbracket has-rigidly attached thereto and extending upwardly therefrom a headed pin 18. The shank of this pin loosely fits an elongated slot 19, provided in the inner portionof the hanger 14: and extending longitudinally *thereof from near its inner end to a point about half way or a little more than'half way to the outer end of the hanger.

It will now be seen that the hanger construction may have its hanger extended outwardly to the desired extent within the range of its movement as shown in Fig. 1, so that the outer portion of the hanger will rest upon the side rail 20 of the bedstead, with the ear 15 at the outer end of the hanger engaging the outer side or corner of said side rail to prevent accidental displacement of the hanger inwardly of the side.

With the parts in this position, the weight of the bed bottom is carried by the hangers by the upper surface of the hanger engaging the lower surface of the horizontal flange 10 of the edge bar 8 with an upwardly directed tension and with the lower surface of the inner end of the hanger engaging the bracket 16' with a downwardly directed tension. It will be seen that the bracket is of such relative size, location and strength as to Well take'this strain. It will be noted particularly that none of the strain of carrying the Weight of the bed bottom is placed upon the headed pin 18. The function of the headed pin is to limit the movement of the hanger in an outwardly direction when in use and to limit the inward or outward movement of the hanger when not in use. In other words the headed pin 18 retains the hanger permanently upon the edge bar; but allows it to be withdrawn or housed as occasion requires. The pin also aids in causing the hanger when ex and may be used with an angle bar side rail in any relative. arrangement of its flanges.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In an adjustable bed hanger construction, the combination of a bed bottom angleiron edge bar having its horizontal flange at the top and extending outwardly with an aperture through the upper part of the ver tical flange of said edge bar, an inwardly extending bracket on the inner side of said vertical flange immediately below said aperture, an upwardly extending headed pin on said bracket, a hanger slidingly mounted intermediate its ends in said aperture and having at its inner portion a longitudinally extending slot through which extends the shank of said pin and a downwardly eX-' tending hook at the outer end of said hanger.

2. In an adjustable bed hanger construc tion, the combination of a bed bottom edge bar having an aperture therethrough and an inwardly extending bracket on the inner side of said bar immediately below said aperture, an upwardly extending headed pin on said bracket, a hanger slidingly mounted intermediate its ends in said aperture and having at its inner portion a longitudinally extending slot through which extends the shank of said pin and a downwardly extending hook at the outer end of said hanger.
