Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. MUNSON, OF GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 592,154, dated June 16, 1874 application tiled May 29, 1874.
To all 'whom t may concernr Be it known that I, CHARLES M. MUNsoN, of Greenfield, in the county ot' Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage- Tops and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in carriage-tops; and it consists in forming the standards in two part-s, which are pivoted together, and provided with a spring-catch, so as to hold the top in any desired position, each part of the standards, at their pivoted ends, having a semicircular socket formed in its side to receive the end ot' the other part, as will be more fully described hereafter.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a represents the lower part of the standard, which is secured to the top edge ot the body of the carriage, and c the upper part, which is made preferably somewhat longer, and is fastened to the under side of the top. Each of these parts are pivoted together, as shown, and each one has its pivoted end made semicircular, which ts in a semicircular socket formed in the end of the other part. Secured, preferably, to the upper part c is a fiat spring, d, to which is attached, at its lower end, a pin, e, which catches iu the series of holes made in the top of the lower part a, andan operating-knob, g, which projects through the part c. By pressing in this knob the pin e is withdrawn from the holes in which it catches, and then the top can be moved freely back and forth, so as to adjust it in any desired position to protect the rider, its movement being limited by the shoulders t'. These standards are intended for either large vehicles or for CHAS. M. MUNSON.
Witnesses HENRY O. MUNsoN, J. M. MUNsoN.
