Description

uiten faire atnt ffies.l
M. Da SAFFORD, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.' Letters Patent No. 61,569, dated January] 29, 1867.
IMPROYED IRONING TABLE.
TO ALL WHOMIT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, M. D. SAFFORD, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, hiive'v invented an Improved Skirt-IroningBoard; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact descrip-` tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Nature.
The naturebf my invention consists in the peculiar device in hanging the legs of a skirt-board so that the article to be ironedmay be easily slipped upon or taken from the board. i
and use.
Drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the skirt-board attached to atable.
Figure 2 is a plan of-the board, bottom side up.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section.
Figure 4 is a section through :c y.. Y
In all the drawings A-represents the ironing-board proper, made of any suitable and of any desired size and shape. Attached to the under side of the boaid is the bracket D, formed as shown in iig. 3, and provided with the thumb-screW'E. The bracket I) and thumb-screw E serve, in combination With the end of the'board .A7 as a fastening, by means of which the whole may be attached to the table, as shown in iig. 1. H H are two cleats, attached to the under side of the ironing-board and provided with' grooves, shown in section in iig. 4. M is a carriage, which is free to slide lengthwise of the board, and is held vby the grooves in the cleats H H. B B are two legs which swing upon the pin P, and are connected by thc pin I to the carriage M. L is acrossbar connecting the two legs B B. C is a brace, attached by a. hinge to the rear part of thc carriage M, and is provided with a slot, s, gs. 1 and 3, through which the cross-bar L passes. The slot s is made as shown in iig. 3, so that when the legs are placed in proper positionthe brace C hangs down upon the cross-bar Hand thus firmly holds the legs. i
To enableothers skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Iwill proceed to describe its construction- Tense my improved ironing-board, first attach it by the rear end to the table by means of the thumb-screw.-
E, slide the carriage M, and fold up the legs in the posltions shown in figs. 2 and 3, and slip the skirt on the board; take hold of the legs B B and pull them with the carriage M out to the end of the board; now bend down the legs in the proper position, as shown in iig. 1, and the brace C catching on the cross-bar Lholds the edges rmly, and the board is ready for use. 4To remove thc skirt, fold up the legs B B and push them with the carriage to the rear of the board, when the skirt can be removed without diiculty.
Claim. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
v 1. The combination and arrangement of the carriage M, the legs B B, the brace C, and the grooved cleats H H, or thir mechanical equivalent, made substantially as described and for the purpose set forth. l
2. The combination of the bracket I), and thumb-screw E, with the table A, .sliding legs B B, and the brace C, when the whole is constructed substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
i M. D. SAFFORD.
