TUG FASTENEB.
(Application flled Oct. 5, 1901.)
(NO 'Mo'del.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JASPER LOCKWOOD, OF--LAUREL,=INDANA.
TUG-FASTENER.
' SPEGIFICAHON forifing part of Ltters Patent No. 700,345, dated May 20, 1902.
Application filed October 5 1901; Serial No. 77 735. (No modal.)
T all wwm it 7nay concern:
Be it known that I, JASPER LOCKWOOD, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Laurel, in the County of F1anklin and State of lndiana, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Tug-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved construction of tug-fastener, the object being to provide a cheap, simple, and efficient appliance capa:
ble of attachment to any and all whiffletrees now in use and by means of which the tug can be securely and automatioally fastened= upon the end of the said whiffletree. 7
With this object in view the invention consists, essentially, of a metallic ferrule adapted to be fitted upon the end of the whiffletree, said ferrule having an opening in which is pivoted a lug, said 111g having a leaf-spring bearing against the end said spring being connected to the ferrule or thimble uponthe inner side and resting Within a groove produced in the end of the whiffietree.
The invention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinaiter and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming part of this spacification, Figure lis a perspective view showing the practical application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top plan view;
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the end of the whiffletree, having a longitudinal groove A produced in the upper face of the same. The metallic ferrule or thimble B is fitted overthe end'of the whifflatree and secured in any snitable manner. This ferrule or thimble has a longitudinal op'ening B arranged directly above the groove A. At the end of said opening the side edges are pressed upwardly,as shown at B in order to form bearings for the pivot C, carrying the fasteninglug D, the inner end of said lug being flattened, as shown at D, and bearing against a leafispring E,- Which rests Within the groove and is securely fastened at E upon the inner side of the ferrule or thimble. or thimble is forced outwardly, as shown at F, to receive the said spring, and beyond the opening the upper face of the ferrule or thimspring, and the tug can be quickly and easily forced over the lu g in its folded position. The moment, hoWever, the tug has passed the fastening-lug the spring Will force it back to its normal or upright position, and thereby prevent the tug working off the end of the whif' fletree, and the portion G Will act as a shoulder "no limit the outWard movement of the lug D,
and thereby preVent the tug forcing the same outwardly.
'Having thus fully described my invention;
what Iclaim as nw; and desire to secure by Letters Patent; is
The combination With a whiffietree, the end of hich is grooved longitudinally; of a ferrule on thimble arranged thereon, said ferrule "or thimble having an opening adapted to aline With the groove in the whiffietree, bearing-recesses produced adjacent to the end of the said opening, a lug arranged at the end of the opening; the pivot passing throngh the 111g and resting in the bearing-recesses, a spring secured within the ferrule,- the free .end bearing against the fiattened end of the lug, the upper face of the ferrule or thimble being forced npwardly t0 accommodate the free end of the spring and serve as a stopshoulder for the lug, substantially as shown and described.
JASPER LOCKWD.
