IMPROVEMENT IN WHIFFLETREES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 74,263, dated February 29, 1876; application filed I 1 January 29, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER P. KUNZ, of Florence, in the county of Benton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Whiffletree Clip and Hook, of which the following is a specification:
f Figure l is a top view of my improved device, showing a tug-eye in place. Fig. 2 is a cross'section of the same, taken through the line .70 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for connecting the tugs with the ends of the whiffletree, which shall he so constructed that the tugs can be very easily and quickly detached, even when the tugs are under strain, which will prevent the tugs from becoming accidentally detached, and which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and less expensive in manufacture than the ordinary clip and hook.
The invention consists in the combination of the clip, cast with the three lugs, and the recess, the U-shaped rod made with. unequal arms, and the spiral spring, with each other, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the clip, band, or ferrule, which is fitted upon the end of the whi'ffletree. The clip A is cast with three lugs-one, a, upon the upper middle part of its forward side, and two, 0. upon the lower end parts of its forward side. In the lower middle part of the forward side of the clip A, between the lugs a and below the lug a is formed a recess, of, to receive the eye or loop of the cockeye. Forconvenience, the two lower lugs a are lnadea little longer than the upper lug a and the three lugs a a a are perforated parallel with the axis of the clip A. B is a U- shaped rod with unequal arms, the shorter arm being made of such a length as to pass through the two lugs a The longer arm of the U-bar B passes through the upper lug (t and upon its projecting part is placed a spiral spring, 0, the inner end of which rests against the lug a and its outer end rests against a nut screwed upon the end of the said arm. The longer arm of the U-barB must be enough longer than the shorter arm to allow the spring 0 to be compressed enough to enable the shorter arm to be drawn out farenough to allow the eyeor loop of the cockeye to be inserted and withdrawn. Y
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the clip A,jcast with the lugs a a a and the recess a, the U-shaped rod B, made with unequal arms, and the spiral spring 0, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
PETER P. -KUNZ. Witnesses:
