UNITED STATEs GEORGE F. EBERHARD,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
TRACE-LOOP.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,626, dated November 20, 1883,
Application filed August 7,1883. (No model.)
ing trace-loop of asingle piece of metal, with
the bottom cross-bar inclosed in the tug convex on one side and tapering toward the edges, to cause it to be automatically restored to an erect position after it has been tilted, either by the insertion of the free end of the trace or by other means.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents the loop in perspective. Fig. 2 is a cross-section, showing the loop applied to a hame-tug; and Fig.
3 is a similar view, showing the loop in a tilted position.
-The loop consists of the top plate, a, the vertical sides 0 c, and the cross-bar s.
The distinctive and important characteristic of my improved trace-loop is in the form of the cross-bare, which is tapering toward the edges, havinga flat bottom and a convex top. By reason of cross-bar 8 being convex on one of its sides, or tapering in a direction lengthwise of the haine-tug, the two parts or sections 6 n of the hame-tug can be easily and neatly fitted to it, as shown in Fig. 2. The
inner and outer parts of the hame-tug are stitched across, in the usual manner, on each side of cross-bar s.
' When the loop has been tilted, as shown in Fig. 3, in passing the free end of the trace 0 through the loop, or from any other cause, the peculiar form of crossbar s enables the two sections en of the hame-tug, which are slightly pressed apart by the tilted loop, to restore theloop by their reaction-to an upright 5 position. Another advantage of this curved or tapering form of cross-bar s is that the two sections 6 n of the hame-tug may be closely fitted to each other at the sides or edges of cross bars without sharply bending the leather, and without leaving an open space through the hame-tug at the sides or edges of the crossbar of the loop.
If preferred, both upper and under sides of cross-bar 8 may be slightly convex or tapering toward the edges.
I claim as my invention- As an article of manufacture, a trace-loop formed with a crossbar to be inclosed in the leather, tapering in opposite directions lengthwise of the haine-tug, and of greater width than thickness, substantially as described.
. GEORGE F. EBERHARD.
