TRACE-BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,018, dated May 24, 1881.

Application filed November 5, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PHILIP S. MILLER, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trace-Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

This invention relates to whatis known as a trace-buckle and it consists in a novel construction of a buckle-frame and tongue-plate, whereby provision is made for carrying the trace or strap in a straight line when in position, so as to prevent wrinkling or crimping thereof.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a harness with my improved buckle applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken in the line 00 m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the tongueplate.

Arepresents the buckle-frame, which is made of any suitable metal, and is of approximate oblong form in its general outline. On three of its sides or edges it is provided with loops a, a and a for the engagement respectively of the hame-tug B, back-band or pad-tug B and belly-band B The fourth side or edge is curved upward and formed into a fiat loop or keeper, 0;, through which passes the trace B In theportion of the frame Anearest the loop or keeper a and on a line with the first three loops referred to, is a cross-bar or plate, C, forming a partial bottom to the frame. The trace B passes between this plate C and the loop a". On the upper side of this plate is a pin or stud, e. The plate and pin are made in one piece with the frame A.

The tongue-piece (see Fig. 3) consists of a plate, F, having one end curved upward and formed into a flat loop or keeper, f, similar to the keeper a of the buckle-frame. Near the other end, on the upper side of the plate, is a projecting pin or tongue, 9, and between this tongue and the keeper f is a hole, h.

The trace B is first passed through the loop or keeper (0. The pin or tongue g is then engaged with one ofthe buckle-holes in the trace, and the trace is passed through the loop or keeperf. The tongue piece or plate F is then placed in position in the frameA so as to rest on the plate C, with the pin or stud ein the hole h and the tongue 9 bearing against the loop a. The front end of the trace B is then passed through a loop or keeper, b, carried by the tug B, and the parts are inposition for use, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in which position the trace is carried in a straight line without wrinkling or crimping, and the pin or tongue 9 serves as a buckle-tongue.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The tongue-piece consisting of the plate F, provided with the loop or keeper f, pin or tongue 9, and hole 71, in combination with the frame A and its pin or stud e and keeper a, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
