TUG-BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,255, dated June 1, 1880.

Application filed February 26, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL O. FOSGATE, of Rochester, in the county of Olmsted and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tug-Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to furnish tug-buckles so constructed as to distribute the strain and prevent the tongue-holes from tearing or cutting out, and which will allow the trace to be readily lengthened and shortened, and will not be liable to become accidentally unfastened.

The invention consists in constructing the buckle-frame with loops to receive the harnessstraps, with its front cross-bar notched, its rear cross-bar beveled, and with flanges or plates upon the inner sides of its side bars to receive the tug, andin constructing the ton guepiece with its forward end curved, its rear edge wedge-shaped, and with a tongue, so that the tug will be securely clamped and held between the said flanges or plates and the said tongue-piece, as will be hereinafter fully described.

A represents the trace, B the hame-tug, and O the loop or keeper through which the free end of the tug A is passed.

D is the frame of the buckle, upon the upper bar of which is formed a loop, E, to receive the back-strap. Upon the lower bar of the frame Dis formed aloop, F, to receive the belly-band strap. Upon the rear bar of the frame D is formed a loop, G, to receive the breechin g strap, and upon its front bar is formed a loop, H, to receive the hame-tug B. The front and rear bars of the frame D project outwardly, to allow the tug Ato be passed between them and the plates or flanges I, formed upon the inner sides of the side bars of the frame D, and the inner edges of which are at such a distance apart as to receive between them the tongue J, formed upon the tonguepiece K. The forward end of the ton gue-piece K is made narrow, is slightly curved outward, and has a longitudinal rib formed upon its outer side to enter a transverse groove or notch in the inner side of the front bar of the frame D to prevent the tongue-piece K from having any lateral movement. The middle part of the tongue-piece K has a shoulder, k, formed upon it to strike against the front crossbar of the frame D and limit the forward movement of the said tongue piece K. The rear end of the tongue-piece K is inclined upon its outer side or made wedge-shaped, and the inner side of the rear cross-bar of the frame D is correspondingly beveled, as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the ton gue-piece'is drawn back by a draft strain upon the trace A the said trace will be clamped between the flat inner side of the tongue-piece K and the plates or flanges I and the tongue J, and the tongueholes of the trace A will be relieved from the strain. Upon the outer side of the rear part of the tongue-piece K is formed a loop, L, to serve as a handle in operating the said ton guepiece. In securing the trace the said trace is passed beneath the rear and front cross-bars of the frame D and through the keeper 0. The forward end of the tongue-piece K is inserted beneath the front cross-bar of the frame D. The tongue J is inserted in a tongue-hole, and the trace and tongue-piece are pushed forward until the rear end of the tongue-piece K can be inserted beneath the rear cross-bar of the frame D. The trace and tongue-piece are then drawn back until the trace is firmly clamped between the tongue-piece K and the flanges or plates I. By reversing this operation the tongue-piece K can be detached and the trace A removed or adjusted, as may be required.

I am aware that it is not new to construct abuekle with a frame having side and end loops and provided with a wedge carrying a stud for the purpose of securing straps, and such I do not claim, broadly.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patout- In a tugbuckle, the combination of the frameD,constructed as described,havingloops constructed as shown and described, to adapt E F'G H and flanges I, with the piece K, havthe buckle to work in connection with a, trace ing tongue J, loop L, a long rib on the outer and tug-strap, as specified.
