Description

I (Model) T. NOBLE.-
Ornamental Bridle Buckle.
No. 238,426. Patented March 1, I881.
WITNESSES 2 INVENTOR i d% Mw ATTORNEYS;
N. PETERS, PIIOTO-LITNOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON D O ilmran STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS NOBLE, OF TODDS POINT, ILLINOIS.
ORNAMENTAL BRlDLE-BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,426, dated March 1, 1881.
Application filed August 25, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS NOBLE, of Todds Point, Shelby county, Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Ornamental Bridle-Buckle, of which the followingis a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a device that, while serving both as buckle and ornament, makes the bridle stronger at the' crossing of the brow-band, throat-latch, and bit-strap by preventing the necessity of making a hole in the throat-latch or brow-band for the engagement of a buckle-tongue.
The invention consists of a plate of metal or other suitable material of ornamental design, and having a central, or nearly central, oblong opening, behind and across which, on the reverse ot'the plate, is fixed a tongue-bar provided with a short fixed tongue or stud, designed for the bitstrap, while also, on the reverse of the plate, and near an edge thereof, is a straight loop for the brow-band, and near the opposite edge an inclined loop for the throatlatch.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation, representing the device in place on a horses bridle. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a reverse elevation of the same; and Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation on line a; 00, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the buckle, consisting of a plate of metal or other suitable material fashioned in the shape of a shield, and having a central, or nearly central, oblong aperture, a, made in it for the accommodation of the bend of the bit-strap B.
In Fig. 1. the buckle A is shown in position on a bridle, E, on the head of a horse, F. On the reverse of the plate A a tongue-bar, b, is fixed transversely across the aperture a, and
(ModeL) isprovided with a short rigid stud or tongue, 0, which projects through the aperture a. flush with the face of said plate, and which passes through the bend of the bit-strap B, and thereby holds the buckle A and the straps B O D in position.
Near the lower end of the device, when it is in the position shown in Fig. 1, and on the reverse thereof, is an elbow-loop, d, set at such an angle that the throat-latch O shall draw straight through it; and near the opposite edge of the plate is a straight loop,f, at right angles to the tongue-bar I), through which the brow-band D, which is a continuation of the throat-latch O, is passed.
A similar buckle, A, is designed to be fixed in the same manner on the opposite side of the horses head-gear, so that the straps or hands B O D are properly secured on both sides.
Ordinarily a buckle is used to hold the straps B O D at this place, and the buckle-tongue is passed through the strap or thr0at-latch,whereby said throat-latch is often split, because of the angular pull upon it. This objection is removed by the application of this device, and consequently the greater durability of the headgear is assured.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, an ornamental bridle-buckle constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of a plate of metal or other suitable material of ornamental design or shape, provided with aperture a, tonguebar b, having rigid tongue 0, throat-latch, elbow-loop d, and browband straight loop f, as set forth.
THOMAS NOBLE.
