TRACE OR HARNESS BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,256, dated April 21, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-'

Be it known that I, DAVID G. GAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pleasant Hill, in the county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace, Hame, and Tug Buckles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to buckles; and it consists in certain details of construction and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved buckle having the harness-straps secured in place. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the buckle-plate, and Fig. 4 a side elevation of the locking-tongue.

A buckle of this character is preferably adapted for harness, and in positions where great strain is liable to occur. It may of course be used wherever the ordinary buckle,

is used.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference refer to similar parts in the several figures, it will be seen that the buckle consists, essentially, of a locking-tongue, A, the holding rings or hands B B, and the plate 0.

The tongue-plate A is pivotally secured to band B by a hinge, m, or in any other wellknown or suitable way. This allows the tongue-bar to be turned up and its locking end a freed from the bar B. This bar A at its free end has a shoulder, a, and an extension, (d. The extension passes under the band B, the shoulder a preventing the band slipping forward. Underneath the extension a" is a projecting lug, a, which enters a hole in strap D when the buckle is ,in place. The

band B has at the middle of its under side a lug, b, Fig. 2, which enters a hole in strap E. The plate 0 also has lugs g, similarto the ones (No model.)

just described, which are adapted to enter holes in the strap F.

The bands B and B are placed in vertical positions and enter the spaces left between the sides and the projections 0. This allows them to be moved backward or forward, but prevents any lateral motion, and said projections c serve to prevent the bands from becoming detached from the buckle-frame.

The plate 0 has two lips, c, on its under side which form a support for the strap F when it is in place. In use the tongue-bar is turned on the band B, so that the strap D'can be slipped between the sides of the bands. The strapE having been inserted between the sides of the band and underneath plate 0, the lugs 9 enter the holes in the end of the strap. The lugsg enter holes in strap F, and when the tongue-bar A is put in place, as shown in Fig. 1, the several parts hold the respective straps firmly. The several parts are strong, and the liability to break and get out of order is avoided.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a buckle, the combination,with strap holding bands and plate having lugs, as described,-of a locking-tongue bar pivotally secured to one of the strap-bands, and provided with an engaging-lug, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with a buckle-frame,'the tongue-plate A, having the shouldered extension and the engaging-lug a, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In combination with a buckle-frame, the strap-bands B and B, one of which is provided with an engaging-lug, b, as and for the purpose setforth.

4. In a buckle, the frame or plate 0, having lips c, projections c, and lugs g, in combination with one or more ofthe strap-bands, as and for the purpose set forth.
