No.179,132. Patented June 27,1876.

UNITED STATES ATEN'I OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. POTWIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-HODS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179. 132, dated June 27, 1876; application filed J une 1, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat- 1, WILLIAM S. Po'rWIN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ooal-Hods; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- I Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of a coalhod embodying my invention. Figure 2 represents a general plan or top view of the same; and Fig. 3 represents a vertical central section of the same, showing a modification of the bottom and the manner of securing the same to the body of the bed.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of my invention is to simplify the construction of coal-hods, so as to lessen the cost of construction, and make them more durable. To that end my invention consists in providing the-hod with a Wood bottom, made in two parts, as is hereinafter more fully described.
In .the drawing, A represents the body of the hod, which is made of sheet metal, as in common use for that purpose. B is the bottom of the hod, and is made of wood, and, in two parts, 0 0, connected together by screws or rivets a a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The lower part of the bottom or base 0, on which the body of the hodrests, is
' made in annular form, and of a diameter exceeding the diameter of the base of the body, and is recessed or cut away at its center, so as to form the projecting annular flange or rim 0!, which is beveled on its inner side to correspond with the taper of the body, and is of the proper circumference, on its inner side, to fit firmly against theouter surface of the base of the body, as shown in Fig. 1. The upper part 0 of the bottom is also made in an annular form, and beveled on its outer side to correspond to the taper of the inner surface of the base ofthe body, and is of the proper diameter to fit within and bear firmly against the inner. surface of the body, and so that, when connected to the part 0, the lower end of the body is compressed between the beveled side or edge of the part 0 and the flange d of part 0, as to firmly connect the body to the bottom.
In the construction of the body, the blank is first cut in the proper shape and connected together at the back, in the usual manner. The shell thus made is then placed upon a former and swaged to the desired shape, and so as to form the base in an annular shape corresponding to the circumference of the inner surface of the flange or rim (1 of the part 0 of the bottom, the object being to admit of making the parts (J and C of the bottom in an annular shape by the use of the ordinary turning-lathe, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture, and insuring a perfect fit of the part 0 and rim (1 against the base of the body.
In the manufacture of small or light hods I sometimes dispense with the flange or rim d on the part 0 of the bottom, as shown in Fig. 3, the bevel of the part (J being such as to prevent the body from being loosened or forced from the bottom by the weight of the material in the hod.
In constructing the bottoms of coal-hods, as described, I can construct them at less cost than those having meta-l bottoms, and are more durable.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is g 1. In a coal-hod, the combination, with the body A, of the wood bottom B, consisting of the parts 0 and G, the part 0 being provided with the annular rim d, beveled on its inner side to fit the outer surface of the base of the body, and the part G beveled to fit the inner surface of the body, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a coal-hod, the combination, with the body A, of the wood bottom 13, consisting of the parts G and C, the part 0 being beveled to fit the inner surface of the base of the body, and connected to the part 0, substantially as specified.
3. In a coal-hod, the combination of the body A, having an annular base, with the wood bottom B, consisting of the parts 0 and O, substantially as specified.
WILLIAM S. POTWIN.
