Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS M. BELL, or new YORK, n. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC BOTTOMS FOR MlLK-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,7 23, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. BELL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Bottoms for Milk-Cans, Pails, Ash- Tubs, and the like; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, which is a vertical section partly broken away.
My invention has for its object to furnish 'an improved means of constructing the bottom of a metallic milk-can or analogous vessel so as to give it the necessary strength to resist the rough usage to which vessels of this class are subjected in handling, and transporting by railroad or otherwise, and to combine lightness with great strength, simplicity, ease of construction, as well as cheapness; and it consists in a combination of a wrought-iron hoop or band with the body and bottom, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the bottom of a can, which may be made concave or convex upon its upper surface, or may be flat, as may be desired. The edge of the bottom A is turned downward, as shown in the figure, to fit closely around within the inner end of the body 0. B is a wrought-iron hoop or hand rolled to form, having a heavy base or shoulder, 12, projecting inward on the lower inner edge, for the turneddown edge of the bottom A and body 0 to rest on, as shown in the figure, thereby protecting the bottom of the can from abrasion, and furnishing a strong base as well as a smooth chine to take hold of in dumping. The parts A, B, and G are securely soldered or riveted together.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The hoop or band B I), made of wroughtiron, rolled, with the .heavy base or shoulder b on the lower inner edge, in combination with the body G and with a bottom, A, formed so that the edge of the bottom fits closely against the interior of the body for a considerable height, as herein specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of December, 1872, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THO. M. BELL.
