Description

L. W. H EM P.
Baal-Hinds.
Patented Dec-31, 1872.
-AM. PHUTO-LITHDGRAPHIC CQNYIOSBORNE'S FRUCESS.)
LEWIS w. HEMP, on ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IPROVEWIENT IN COAL-MODS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. ll34ll,379, dated December 31, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS W. HEMP, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have made a certain new and useful Improved Goal-Hod; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and true description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
To form a more strong and durable coal-hod, prevent liability of the bottom becoming disengaged, and otherwise to form a more perfect water-tight joint and fit of parts than achieved by the ordinary manners of connecting and securing the bottom to hods, the nature of this invention consists in flaring outwardly the bottom edge of hod, forming the bottom proper to fit within and providing said bottom with a turned edge to be flattened on the bottom edge of hod, while the hoop is placed within bottom and the several parts properly riveted.
To enable those herein skilledto make and use my said improvement, I will now more fully describe the same, referring to the figure of drawing, as showing hod at bottom in sections.
A is the body of hod. The bottom edge a of hod is slightly flared outwardly. B is the ordinary stamped bottom. This is stamped and formed to correspond with the flared edge of the body and provided with an outer flange or edge, b. The bottom B thus formed is placed and nicely fitted inside the body A. Its edge b is turned up and flattened on the edge a of said body. (See drawing.) The flaring edge a and bottom B formed to fit and its turned edge b form a complete Water-tight joint. The hoop O is slipped or fitted inside of the under face of the bottom B, and thus the edges and joints of the several parts can be connected by the same rivets. By this arrangement the hoop 0 supports the bottom. All weight, therefore, in hod is borne by the body A,bottom B, and hoop 0, making a more durable manner of securing the several parts, preventing wear at bottom, and doubly preventing possibility of bottom being knocked or forced out.
The advantagesof less labor, and of strength and durability of hod, as well as simplicity in the arrangement and construction of parts, are readily apparent.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim is An improved coal hod, its bottom edge flared outwardly and providing 'its bottom with a turned edge flattened on the body and placing the hoop inside of bottom, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of said invention I have hereunto set my hand.
