Hooded Coal Hod.

N. PETERS, PMOTO-UTMOGRAPHER WAsmNGToN D c I i 1 v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
HERBERT SYMONDS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
HOODED COAL-HOD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,952, dated June 15, 1880.
Application filed March 2, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT SYMoNDs, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Hooded Goal-Hod, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of myimproved coal-hod. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish improved coal-hods provided with covers, which shall be so constructed that the coal cannot fall off at the sides and back while being emptied, and so that they cannot have their discharge-aperture clogged while being filled.
A represents the body of the hod, which is made of the usual shape and of any desired size. B is the cover, the rear part of which inclines downward and is made of such a shape and size that its edge may correspond with and fit upon the edge of the rear part of the hod A. The forward part of the cover B may be made a little wider than the forward part of the hod A and have downwardly-proj ectin g wings 0 formed upon its side edges to overlap the sides of the said hod A, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The cover B is pivoted to the hod A between its center and the discharge-spout, and is pro vided with a handle, I), a little in the rear of its center. The hod A is provided with a handle, a, upon the lower part of its rear side, in the usual way.
With this construction the hod is raised and carried by means of the handle b, and when raised the weight of the hod A will bring the cover B into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, lowering the forward part of (Model.)
the said cover and raising its rear part, so that coal cannot roll or spill off while a filled hod is being carried.
hen the hod A is inclined to pour out the coal the said hod is held by the two handles a b, and the act of inclining the hod A brings the said two handles 1) a closer together, which raises the forward end of the cover B and opens the discharge-aperture, so that the coal can pass out freely, the wings O preventing it from rolling off at the sides. At the same time the rear part of the cover B closes down upon the rear part of the hod A and prevents dust from escaping into the room. It will be observed that when the rear part of the cover B is raised to allow the hod A to be filled the dischargeaperture is contracted, and when the forward part of the cover B is raised in pouring out the coal the discharge-aperture is enlarged. This prevents the discharge-aperture from becoming clogged and allows the coal to pass out freely.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a hod, of the cover B, overlapping the hod at the sides, pivoted thereto between the center and dischargespout, and having handle I), as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the pivoted cover B and 110d A, of the swinging handle 1), substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
HERBERT SYMONDS.
