Description

c. s. IRWIN. COAL-SCUTTLE.
Patented Jan. 23
ATTORNEYS.
N-PETEIS. PHDTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. n, c.
UNITED STATES PATENT A OFFIGE.
lHARLES S. IRWIN, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
' IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-SCUTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,48 1, dated-January 23, 1877; application filed December 4, 1876. V
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S IRWIN, of
St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Goal-Scuttle, of which the following is a specification Figure lis a vertical section on line as w in Fig. 2. ,Fig. 2 is a bottom view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
closed by a slide, 0, that passes through a slit cut in the side of the scuttle, and is guided by U-shaped strips 6 e, which are attached to the body of the scuttle at each side, an
aperture, f, corresponding in size to the opening in the bottom 3. A stop, g, is formed on the slide, to prevent it from being entirely withdrawn from the scuttle. The scuttle is filled in the usual way, while the opening in the bottom is closed by the slide. When its contents are to be emptied into the stove the scuttle is placed in the opening in the stovetop, and the slide 0 is drawn out until its opening coincides with the opening in the scuttle-bottom, when the coal runs from the scuttle into the stove, and all spilling and dust is avoided.
In addition to the advantages mentioned, it has the advantage of being cheaply constructed, requiring no special machinery or apparatus in its manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, I am aware that it is not new to use a slide inthe bottom of a coal-scuttle, so that the coal may flow automatically through the bottom; but
What I claim is- A new article of manufacture, consisting of the conical body A, with knees a, and the concave bottom B, with median slide, as shownand described, to form a coal-scuttle adapted to be used with magazine-stoves, as specified.
CHARLES STUART IRWIN.
